Carlisle the new head coach?
May 3rd, 2008 Posted in Mavs TalkFoxSports.com is reporting that Rick Carlisle has agreed to terms to become the Mavericks new coach.
However, no other news site is reporting this as of right now. ESPN.com said that he’s coming back for a second interview today but didn’t mention being hired already.

Isn’t it a bit premature to hire the first coach you interview?

So now that Avery IS fired, whats gona happen to fireavery.com?
By Elraptor on May 3, 2008 at 1:31:36 pm
I want Mike to get it.
By camaro32 on May 3, 2008 at 2:35:49 pm
Well, I don’t see the list getting any better. Carlisle has just as good or better of a resume as any of the other coaches that are available or would become available so it seems like a good idea to get the ball rolling and hopefully working on bringing in some younger players.

Glad to see Donnie making this move quickly, before Chicago and New York have a chance to get Carlisle.
Let Mike D’Antoni go somewhere else. His system is s***.

It seems to be confirmed by DB.com:

Yash,
fireavery.com will become whatever coach gets hired. Be patient, it could turn into firecarlisle.com, firedantoni.com or whoever gets the job.
By T on May 3, 2008 at 6:11:00 pm
TNT reported it is not a done deal and Carlisle is still going to meet with New York.
By mike on May 3, 2008 at 7:08:37 pm
New York? Why would he want to coach a bunch of losers when he could have Dirk and the Mavs?
By Spurred1 on May 3, 2008 at 7:11:07 pm
I don’t know why Carlisle would want the Knicks job. That team is a monumental mess; it’ll take forever to clean up and get into some sort of order. Dallas is a mess right now too, but not to that extent. My concern is that just about everyone will be reluctant to work for an owner that is more interested in himself and constantly shows off, proceeding to embarrass just about everyone associated with the Mavericks(except for himself.)
Although the team does embarrass itself quite a bit as well. Let’s review:
Damp=embarrassment-He should not be in the league at all. Kwame Brown’s twin, apparently.
Howard= He’s not embarrassed at all about his ridiculous behavior and crappy play.
Bench= Ughhh. Put all of them on the bus for the retirement home. Bass stays, that’s it.
I don’t want D’Antoni to coach this team. His style is fun to watch, but it is ineffective. The Spurs just proved that, yet again.
By T on May 3, 2008 at 7:59:03 pm
Barkley 100% agreed with you Mike & Spurred1. Who would want to coach in New York anyway except someone desperate for a job.
By Richard on May 3, 2008 at 8:36:30 pm
Mike, you have got to lay off D’Antoni. He’s is a very good coach. You and Spurred1 keep saying that he couldn’t beat the Spurs. The Spurs are a dynasty for a reason. The Suns lost in the western conference finals 3 years in a row. If you tell me the Showtime Lakers ran a much different system then I ask you to tell me what the differences were. The Lakers ran like crazy for 40 minutes and threw the ball down low the last few minutes of the game. What about the Suns style was so different? They ran like crazy and then threw the ball down low to Amare and Shaq. The only difference in those two teams is that Magic, Worthy and Kareem played some serious D when it counted and the Suns didn’t. And to tell you the truth I don’t think any team with Nash will ever be a good defensive team.
By mike on May 3, 2008 at 8:49:12 pm
The difference is, the Showtime Lakers have rings to show for it.
By mike on May 3, 2008 at 8:49:42 pm
And let’s not insult a great coach like Pat Riley by comparing him to the choker, D’Antoni.
By Richard on May 3, 2008 at 9:05:44 pm
So in other words Mike the players made the differences?
By mike on May 3, 2008 at 11:53:05 pm
Different time, different game, but I’m not about to start making excuses for D’Antoni. If you want him, then Cuban might as well bring back Nellie; no D, at all.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Rick Carlisle, but everything to do with Josh Howard. I am including this link to an MTV cribs feature on J-Ho. Its a really beautiful house, and I enjoyed his comment about getting his 4-year degree at Wake Forest.
However, after we have all just recently witnessed his playoff performances, his bizarre comments about both marijuana and his play on the court, you will definitely want to pay attention to the comments he makes in this video…It’s probably just me, but I don’t really get a good sense that this is a guy who has what it takes to help bring a championship to dallas.
But like I said, nice crib Josh!

Mike you can’t bash D’Antoni like that. One year ago if it wasn’t for a stupid suspension that team would have been in the finals no questions about it. The year before that they got to the conference finals even without Amare Stoudemire. D’Antoni rejuvinated that franchise and I think he could do the same thing here in Dallas with the right personel.
By drew on May 4, 2008 at 8:17:25 am
To the commenter saying who would want to coach the loser Knicks? Well, sometimes in life it’s not just about that. Some coaches and human beings in fact are driven by challenges. There are plenty of coaches that would love to have a chance to turn the Knicks around.
By Ronald on May 4, 2008 at 10:46:02 am
All I know is that we’ve been calling for Avery to get the hell out… Done… and for Carlisle to come on board… almost done… looking forward to next season…
By mike on May 4, 2008 at 8:42:12 pm
7 seconds or less.. that’s what you want for this Mavericks team? Dirk to be running up and down(getting tired unnecessarily) and attempting low-percentage shots? For the players to be gassed at the end of the season? I’ll be damned if D’Antoni ends up in Dallas.
By Richard on May 4, 2008 at 9:30:07 pm
The Suns got gassed Mike because D’Antoni refused to go to his bench and only played 6 or 7 deep during the regular season. And I wouldn’t call fastbreak points low % shots. The Suns had the highest field goal % in basketball last year and I doubt it was because they took low % shots.
And everyone please think about what Carlisle is doing with the Knicks. He knows the owner with the deepest pockets wants him so why wouldn’t he visit the biggest market and drive his price up. If New York makes him an offer then Cuban has to up his offer.
By drew on May 5, 2008 at 8:56:06 am
I have the irky feeling that Carlisle might end up in New York. But I also have this irky feeling if the Mavs get Carlisle, we’ll be in the same situation in 2-3 years with no championship or even getting close to it. That’s if Carlisle keeps doing what he does best in the playoffs. His record is just as bad as Avery’s, actually worse if you go by percentages.

Just change the name of the website to firerick.com. With this old, short on talent team he will be on the outs soon. They could bring Red Auerbach back from the dead and he would get fired in a couple of years with this team and our salary cap issues. Only desperate coaches will come here, of which Carlisle is one. I am pretty sure that his Detroit stay was similar to Avery’s here. The players got tired of him and had him fired. Just another coach for Jason “old man” Kidd to get fired.
By BBALL on May 5, 2008 at 11:45:31 am
You Dallas fans are really going to wish Avery Johnson never got fired one day!
By rishabh on May 5, 2008 at 1:12:15 pm
i dont care who we have coaching next year, only if we get rid of j-howard and maybe stack, we can get somewhere. there are rumors for a sign and trade with marion for stack and howard, which the mavs should do in a second. marion with kidd and nowitzki and terry with bass would be a great team
By camaro32 on May 5, 2008 at 2:50:26 pm
Sign and trade for Marion needs to happen. That would be make us title favorite no matter who the coach is.
Also, to the person who said we’ll regret firing Avery:
Yeah it’s true that Avery might be a great coach in the league someday, but the growing pains of him learning how to coach while our team is in their prime is a bit too much to deal with. Let him learn with some other team and hopefully be successful one day. I won’t regret it even if Avery wins 5 championships somewhere cause I know for sure it won’t be happening anytime soon. He’s too dumb right now and doesn’t understand the coaching aspects of this game. He can’t make substitutions, has no offensive or defensive creativity and really doesn’t have anything intelligent to contribute. Dirk will be retired from the league and Kidd will be collecting social security by the time Avery figures it all out and that’s why Avery had to go. Just wasn’t right for this team.
By T on May 5, 2008 at 4:43:15 pm
I don’t see what the rush is to hire a coach. I wish the Mavs would interview all the candidates before choosing Carlisle. I am not sure that he is the best fit. Isn’t he just White Avery? I do not remember him coaching but from what I heard he micro manages everything. Hopefully Carlisle is a smart enough coach to adjust to make the most of his player’s strengths, something Avery was unwilling to do.
By Spurred1 on May 5, 2008 at 5:52:55 pm
One of the reasons Marion left the Suns was because he wanted more money and more credit. He didn’t like being the second or third most important Sun. I don’t know if he’s had a change of heart since joining the Heat, but he may not like being second/third guy behind Dirk & Kidd on the Mavs. Just something to keep in mind. I like him; he plays defense and can score (ugly shot)-something the Mavs need.
The ideal coach for the Mavs doesn’t exist. D’Antoni refuses to use his bench during the regular season and postseason and plays a style that is incredibly entertaining, yet ultimately ineffective. I don’t want to hear about how they would have won last year, except for the suspensions. They had other opportunities to win the series and they failed to do so. D’Antoni isn’t a bad coach but I don’t think he’ll be the Mavs’ savior. Carlisle might be Avery’s double-controlling every move, but who else is out there? The Mavs should hire someone sooner than later so everyone can get familiar with each other. While the coaching decision is crucial, it is far from being the only problem the Mavs have. They have got to do something about that bench. They need to address what to do about Howard. They need to get Diop back-the Nets hardly used him, from what little I saw.

I love this scouting article on what Byron Scott did to neutralize the Spurs in game 1. I couldn’t help but think how Avery would’ve come up with NONE of these things until probably game 4 (at earliest) when we’d be down 3-0 already:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2008/columns/story?page=ScoutingSpursHornets-Game2
It just goes to show that there are good coaches out there who aren’t dumb and can actually make adjustments WITHIN an 1800 hour period.
By DB on May 7, 2008 at 11:17:30 am
Didn’t Stackhouse play for Carlise when he was in Detroit? I wonder if they asked his opinion, since he and Avery nearly came to blows during a practice?
By Dirk Nowitzki on Jun 2, 2008 at 12:30:54 pm
WHY DONT YOU DARE TO ANSWER ANYMORE?????
I LOVED AVERY, MAN, I WILL ASK TO BE TRADED ON DRAFT DAY!!!!(as a surprise)
