Quick quick hits
May 2nd, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson, Mavs TalkJust a real quick post tonight.
Go check out the Miracle Worker post on DallasBasketball.com about how much Avery loves him some Avery. If you’re really a guy of “honesty and integrity” do you need to say so during your going away speech? Should your actions be able to speak for you?
Also check out the story on DB.com about the Mavs short list for coach. That short list apparently only includes Van Gundy, Carlisle and D’Antoni right now.
Rick Carlisle was the first person to interview for the job.
The Miami Heat may be interested in Josh Howard. Would Shawn Marion interest anyone?
The Atlanta Hawks have somehow forced a game seven against the Celtics. I don’t think anybody expected them to win one game, myself included, but this is a great story. It would be amazing if the Hawks could somehow knock the Celtics off Sunday afternoon.
I’m going to be out of town all weekend so no new posts, unless a coach is hired. I’ll be back Monday with an update on the status of the site. It’s not going anywhere, just getting a little bit of a name change.
Saturday Morning Update
The article about Carlisle linked above is now saying he is being brought back to Dallas for a second interview. Looks like the Mavs may not even wait until the playoffs are over before naming him the new coach.
And the Rockets lost last night. Seeing the Rockets go out in the first round again should make everyone around here a little happier.

Yeah, Avery keeps praising himself!
Oh well, but how ’bout dem Hawks?!!!! They’re making me forget about the debacle that was the Mavs post-season!
The Oh-So-Mighty Celtics are no more!

I think Marion would be a huge improvement over Howard, he can hit set shots from the three point line, help their fast break, is a better defender than Howard, and he gets his own points without having to have plays run for him. I think that would be a no brainer for the mavs to get him if they can.
Don’t hire Van Gundy either, Carlisle is the best choice.

Like I’ve been saying for awhile now, we’d be even better than the Lakers if we could land Marion and maybe add some depth to the bench with Diop and a young PG that will actually play (sorry Lue).
A trade of Howard for Marion would be a blessing. The question is what Marion thinks of his old coach in Phoenix? It would be realistic to go for Carlisle if we had the intention of trying to land Marion.

To keep goin on this Marion thing…he’s a great defender and he will allow us to have more of an excuse to get out of Avery’s stupid half court sets. Those iso plays destroyed Kidd’s season here. Kidd needs to run the point by being able to make his own decisions. He has made a career doing that. He doesn’t need an inferior PG/coach in Avery telling him what to do. I think both Kidd and Dirk would thrive with Marion in a quick offense and luckily Bass and Jet are both athletic enough to keep up and help out too. Plus, Marion can defend.
I was looking at the Trade Machine link you put up, Greg. I can’t believe we only have 7 players under contract and are over the cap. We have some TERRIBLE contracts signed out. We are like the Redskins of the NBA with no cap space in a summer where we could really make some noise in free agency.

Seriously, who cares if someone praises them self. My last manager who I’ve worked with at several jobs always claims this: “Worship the ground you walk on, you are number one, everyone else comes second.”
That was his belief when it comes to his career and work. I couldn’t disagree either, when it comes to your career you look out for yourself, not others in all situations.
People shouldn’t dog a guy for trying to stay positive and the positive things they did. I’d rather Avery love Avery than Avery go kill himself. It’s also better than him just trashing the organization, let him have his 15 minutes of Avery ego and move on already, he’s no longer the coach of the Mavs.

Awesome. Like I said, welcome to Big D, Coach Carlisle.
camaro, you just said what I was thinking. An actual defensive presence in the starting lineup in Shawn Marion.. he’s what Devean George was supposed to be, except he shoots better, rebounds better, scores more, and can play the entire game.

marion would be a HUGE addition to this team. the starting lineup could be kidd, terry, marion, dirk, and unfortunately damp(we re stuck with that for a couple more years)
and then the bench would be bass, george, wright, lue? and pick up another good role player. thats a strong team, marion is so underrated. he is the perfect player to run the break with kidd. and marion can guard all five positions on the floor. get carlisle, pick up marion, trade howard, pick up 1 or 2 good role players, we are as good as new and headed to the finals 2008! include stack in that trade, and see if we can get diop too. someone email this to cuban! its the perfect solution!!!

Marion would be a great addition to the Mavs. Why would the Heat want to deal Marion for Howard? I guess Marion could try to force a trade if he wants to be here. Kidd, Marion, Dirk and Damp would be a great starting lineup. All that the Mavs would need would be a good sg with the MLE or start Terry if he is not included in a deal.

One option: Marion opts out of the final year of his contract and agrees to a sign-and-trade(hopefully for a little bit less $) to Dallas for J-Ho and ???

Marion is a perfect fit for the Mavs, in multiple ways.
As a 3, his strengths (defense and rebounding) make up for Dirks deficiencies as a 4. He will score too, especially if he runs with Kidd. His ability to rebound and guard bigger players will allow an undersized but effective Brandon Bass to get more playing time.
I think that the addition of Marion and maybe a james posey or raja bell type (a good perimeter defender that can catch and shoot) would push the mavericks past everyone in the west besides maybe the lakers.

Thankfully, there are still bad GMs in the league that think Howard is more than the decent player he really is. Marion would be good. I only have two knocks on Marion, one of which will be taken care of in Dallas.
One, he doesn’t create very many of his own shots. Nash created most of them in Phoenix. Kidd will create alot of them here. Two, and more of a concern, is Marion seems like he doesn’t care if he wins or not. Remember he WANTED out of Phoenix and seems content enough in lottery bound Miami collecting a check.
I’m hoping we can deal Howard for 1st round pick towards the low end of the lottery and a decent role player myself, but thats just me.
