Coaching search update
May 2nd, 2008 Posted in Mavs TalkThe Dallas Morning News has an update on the coach hunt.
Jeff Van Gundy, Del Harris and Paul Westphal have all said they’re not interested in the job.
Rick Carlisle is coming to town for an interview very soon.
Flip Saunders and Mike D’Antoni are both going to be canidates if they leave their current teams.
Yesterday on ESPN radio Donnie said his name is on the list, but at the very botton and that he hopes it doesn’t come to that.
The list is quickly being whittled down. With the Mavs having interest in Saunders it’s going to be at least two or three weeks before anyone would be named.

I find it interesting that Mark Cuban fires the coach without a replacement in mind. I also find it interesting that none of the assistants want the job. Does anybody know where I can get an application? I coached my son’s Boy’s Club teams for three years and would accept a contract whereby I was only paid for wins. I cannot get the theme from Rocky out of my head as I consider the possibility of being the next Mavs coach.

Westphal was never being considered, I don’t care what the article says. The day before Donnie already said that no one from the current staff is being considered. Westphal saying he’s not interested would be like me saying I don’t want to f Lindsay Lohan, just because I know it would never happen. Gimme an fing break. Westphal’s contributions to the offense this year were about as good as Juwan Howard’s contributions on the court.

CNNSI report:
Should Mike D’Antoni and the Suns soon part company, his name will be added to Mark Cuban’s short list that ultimately may include Rick Pitino. I’ve been told he’d consider leaving Louisville for a third NBA chance, but the team would have to be in relatively good roster shape. I don’t know; the thought of coaching Erick Dampier (11M/$12M/$13M) for the next three seasons might be a turn-off. It’s not as if he can be traded. I doubt Cuban could package Dampier with Microsoft and get a good deal.

“Rick Carlisle will be the first interviewee for the Mavericks’ opening, but Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson did not dispute Wednesday’s report here that the job would already be his if he wanted the position.” - ESPN’s Mark Stein

Oops… totally read that wrong. But Rick C. looks like the only serious candidate, to this point.

Rick C. would be a great coach here. Now lets add some YOUNG depth to the bench, sign back Diop and trade for Carmelo or another talented player to take some pressure off Dirk.

Anybody but Spurs-owned Mike D’Antoni. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Check his head-to-head playoff record with Gregg Popovich.

No one wants to come coach this sinking ship…everyone knows the next coach is going to be fired Cuban thinks he can win a championship with the team he has now…and they just are not as talented as other teams in the west. Next season could be brutal!!!

Source: Mavs Want D’Antoni

An NBA source said Mike D’Antoni is first on Dallas’ wish list to replace Johnson.
Chicago and New York also might be interested in D’Antoni, but GM Kerr said he would not grant permission to a team wishing to speak with D’Antoni.

I sure wish Donnie would change his mind. He would make a very good head coach if he had the desire.

What about Randy Ayers. He’s a good defensive coach that loves up tempo. He’s at Washington now I think so he could convince Arenas or even Jamison to come if they haven’t already signed and we somehow fit them into our roster.

It’s a pity Rudy T isn’t interested in coaching positions any more.

Apparently, JVG is not totally out of the picture which prompted me to uncock the gun whose barrel was until recently placed squarely on my temple. This is according to db.com. Of interest it says…
ITEM: Very important to note: If you survey Mavs insiders as to which of the three is “the best pure coach,’’ Jeff Van Gundy is your winner.
I told y’all beeyatches.
His ‘disinterest’ could just be him being coy and a good negociator. I hope so. I think he is clearly the best guy available.
HIRE JVG!

we had a coach who made the playoffs every year, set the franchise records for wins and winning percentage, led the team to the ONLY finals appearance ever, helped keep this team relevant when it was sinking the year he took it over, and all this in less than 4 years.
I guess you all forgot what it was like to be the worst team in the league for an entire decade. To hope the team could at least win 10 games a season, 20 if we kept our fingers crossed.
So what if avery lost a couple of players, replace them, not him. Is the next coach going to have anything even close to avery’s body of work over the duration of the next 3 ful seasons? 73% winning percentage, a trip to the finals, consecutive 50 win seasons?
donnie Nelson is the only candidate that dows anything for me. I don’t think he wants the job, because he will be out in 3 years.

Hey Mike just out of curiuosity, besides Phil Jackson who has a great playoff record against Gregg Popovich?
By mike on May 3, 2008 at 9:23:27 am
Not very many, but Pop absolutely owns D’Antoni and that sorry system of his.
