Donnie on the Ticket
May 1st, 2008 Posted in Mavs TalkDonnie Nelson was just on with the Musers on the Ticket and had a couple things to say about the coaching hunt.
No one from the current staff.
No college coach without NBA experience.
Someone that plays a more up-tempo game, but is not looking to score 140 points a game.
No one on the current roster is untouchable, as far as trades go.
So does that change anyone’s idea about who they could be looking at?

It doesn’t matter. They can hire Mickey mouse and the results will still be the same. once a loser, always a loser.

I’d have to agree, they need to go outside the organization to find their new coach to rebuild the existing team with Kidd as point guard.
Mike D’Antoni if available is or should not be an option. His style of play will just have us looking for a new coach in 3-4 seasons with a bunch of first round exits in the playoffs.
Larry Brown is already taken but I wouldn’t want him anyways. Good coach but he’s quick to bail upon any type of failure.
They need to find a coach that suits their needs and he needs to stick around for awhile. The upper management should realize that it could be several seasons before the Mavericks are once again an elite team with potential for winning a championship.

DOUG MOE! Now there’s an experienced NBA coach that loves up-tempo. He’s assisting at Denver at the moment, as if you couldn’t tell!
By FredM on May 1, 2008 at 8:53:52 am
are they going to dump Mario Elie? I was hoping he could get a job in Houston but was glad to see him working.
By mrtwister on May 1, 2008 at 8:57:02 am
I know this isn’t the post to put this in, but what the hell is this?
“I couldn’t make the shots that I’ve been making,” Howard said, giggling at a question about how the Hornets defended him. “They went up and just hit the side of the rim or went in and out. You can’t control what the ball do. Crazy, man. Y’all hilarious.”
You can’t control what the ball do? Josh…….you shot the damn thing. How can that not be controlling the ball? I think Howard’s been listening to too many Afroman songs before game time.

The Rockets pushed the tempo under Van Gundy didn’t they? Please say they did. :]

Let’s make Kidd the player/coach. Then he can get himself fired like he has done to most of the coaches who have made the fatal attempt to attempt to coach him. What a great way to get rid of the bum.
By Melissa on May 1, 2008 at 10:35:22 am
My first choice is Van Gundy. Don’t know if he’ll want to come out of retirement though.
By Melissa on May 1, 2008 at 10:38:57 am
Actually here are my top choices from first to third:
Jeff Van Gundy
Del Harris
Rick Carlisle
By Gabe on May 1, 2008 at 11:10:38 am
Josh Howard is a joke. Of course you can control what the freakin ball does, its round! Aim it properly!

Just read David Moore’s article in the Dallas Morning News. He sums up the Mavs last 3 years very well. After reading that you will see that the next coach has no hope and will be fired quickly. Also how do you coach a team with Cuban sitting on bench at every road game, and scowling at you from courtside seat at home games. I have said it over and over the Mavs are not that good. And this comes from a guy who used to love the Mavs (prior to the Kidd trade), is a season ticket holder and has been to 75% of the home games since I moved here in 1993. This team couldn’t play to the level of the hype.
I read Nowitzki’s comments yesterday. Reading between the lines it sounds to me that he has already begun his I need to get to a championship contender with his “no one is untouchable for a trade”, and his “if I am still here next year” comments. Can’t say as if I blame him, although I think he was an instigator in the Kidd trade fiasco. Even with that being said he will still be the one and only player I will miss if they blow the whole team up as they should.

Van Gundy?!?!? No way, no how. The Rockets made a giant improvement when Addleman took over. If Avery’s offensive system was bad, JVG’s would put us to sleep in the first half.
Carlisle would be a good pick, but what about Pitino or Calipari? NBA experience, not great results when they were there, but experience. I’d say Billy Donovan, but no NBA experience.
By Mark on May 1, 2008 at 11:35:29 am
Josh-it do what it do man. Toke up and relax man. Nobody on yo beehind. Dat rock have a mind of its own man.
By dantoni ????????? on May 1, 2008 at 11:36:30 am
pleeeease dont bring in dantoni. the guy is a loser and cant coach. look at the talent hes had in phoenix … joe johnson, kurt thomas, shaq, amare, nash, and u cant win? all he does is complain on the sidelines, and in his timeouts all he says is pick up the tempo. i heard in the suns practices they work on getting down the court and score in 4-5 seconds … SERIOUSLY?? we could use van gundy or carlisle
By Jeffy on May 1, 2008 at 12:10:29 pm
Anyone who listens to Van Gundy on TV should know that the guy is a moron. I can’t stand listening to him.
By Aubrey on May 1, 2008 at 12:10:32 pm
I dont think it matters who we get next they will just be fired Cuban want s a championship w/ the team he has ….and the team he has isnt that good. We are over our cap and we have a used up washed up pg who we are paying 20 mil to…we are prolly the laughing stock of the western conference shoot the NBA. We will never win a championship with the team we have and we have no money to get new players…JK is pathetic it sickens me to watch him. Until Cuban sells the team or goes up in his owners box and shuts up and lets people who actually know basketball run the team we will continue to go downhill. ALso, Howard started doing bad when Kidd came…I dont think he likes Kidd or his game style…I am not saying hes a superstar player he just did better w/ Harris as pg…just something to think about.
By Bryant on May 1, 2008 at 1:09:10 pm
JVG is a good announcer on television. He’s the only guy who makes note of the incessant flopping going on these days. *I’m looking at you Manu Ginobli*
By ndnballer on May 1, 2008 at 1:18:37 pm
I think that we should keep Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Brandon Bass, and maybe Terry for sure. Other than those four, I dont really care who gets traded. I dont think its time to completely destroy the team like the Memphis Grizzlies or anything, we just need a better and more consistent sidekick for Dirk. As for the coaching situation, I dont see anyone that appears to be a perfect match for the Mavs, but we need a hybrid of the coaching styles of Don Neslon and Avery Johnson.
By rs691919 on May 1, 2008 at 2:21:49 pm
The only shot the Mavs have at winning a championship with Dirk is if the Lakers somehow get humiliated in the playoffs this year. If that happens, Kobe will start to grumble again; he’ll realize that Gasol is soft, Bynum is always hurt, and Lamar Odom is just not that good. He’ll realize that he wants out and he will make it clear that he is going to opt out of his contract at the end of next season. This will either force a trade, or the Lakers will hold on to him for one more playoff run, after which he will be a free agent.
The guy absolutely wants to play with Dirk. It would be a killer combination. A pipedream? Perhaps. But not as farfetched as it might sound.

Aubrey makes a good point about the chemistry between Howard and Harris. They were best friends and Harris was at game 3 showing support for Howard. But thats no excuse! Man up and play ball. This is business not Harris. Harris probably could have elevated his game with a different coach but Harris is the past! Let him go! Everyone sounds off like Harris was this amazing point guard and he wasn’t. The 2nd game Jason Kidd played he got more assist than the team had in two seasons. Jkidd would hands down be the greatest point guard if he had a perimeter shot. So the mavs are stuck with him for one more year. Better than having shaq! The mavs have options its up to them whether they want to blow this team up or try to work with what we have (bad idea). Cuban has to be patient, not a Steinbrenner. I could what a year or two if I knew my team would become San antonio caliber team. Has there been slot of bad decisions yes but you gotta take a chance. At least Cuban is passionate about winning! We could be Memphis or the bucks! As long as he’s the owner, I think the mavs will be okay.

Kobe isn’t going anywhere! Keep dreaming!

shut down this website man…no use now. Let the new era begin.
By T on May 1, 2008 at 2:59:13 pm
It does not matter who coaches this team next year if Josh Howard’s half-baked brain is out there on the court starting at the sf.
The coach should definitely be someone with no past ties to the Mavericks. This is probably an unpopular idea, but I would like to see George Karl here if Denver lets him go.
By T on May 1, 2008 at 3:06:56 pm
Heres another idea…What about Darrell Armstrong? I know he has good leadership abilities but I am not sure if he has the gigantic ego or not. If I remember correctly when he played here he was a positive leader. He would be unexperienced but maybe not so egotistical not to listen to advice from an experienced assistant coach. This would be in the mold of the Avery hiring but maybe with better coaching IQ.
I guess I contradicted myself as hire no one with past ties to the Mav’s, but he just came to mind and would probably be less expenxive than some of the big names to start.

By Detox the Mavs on May 1, 2008 at 4:05:13 pm
Firing Avery is the best decision the Mavericks and Cuban could of made. When your coach does not call a post up play or a penetration play in the second half of a game when you shooting under 30 percent he is an idiot. I don’t care if the Mavericks are a jump shooting team. The point being create a mismatch and put someone on the block. The next move needs to be trading Josh Howard. Not just because his poor playoff performance but for his inability to recognize that his jump shot is not that great and he needs to drive to the basket more.
By selke99 on May 1, 2008 at 4:06:26 pm
The only thing I’m worried about Rick Carlisle is I think he was rushed out of Indiana by the players. He sounds like he’s from the same mold as Avery, a conservative, defensive-minded disciplinarian.
To keep this window open, I thought they should keep in inhouse, either Westphal (offense) or Del Harris (experience, familiar with team).
By Aubrey on May 1, 2008 at 7:03:39 pm
RS unlike Memphis Lakers wouldnt give up Kobe for nothing….so how we going to get him..and the best question how we going to pay him???? Oh and Kidd can’t play D’antoni’s game it involves running and if u watch bball at all you would notice he’s slow…hence he got burned by Chris Paul repeatedly…Chris Paul showed how truly pathetic Kidd is….I wish Cuban would sell the team and we start all over cu right now thats the only way things are going to be fixed. ANd i think Harris if he has the right coach can be a great pg…he is really fast and he has a better jump shot then Kidd not that that is saying much…
By mrtwister on May 1, 2008 at 7:44:14 pm
Wow. Kidd has a shocker in Game 4 and then the Kidd haters are back. I’m not sure what he’s done to you guys, slept with your wives or something maybe? I can just feel the hate, but he’s not the main problem here. I understand Paul did dominate the series but who actually did shut him down and you’re kidding yourself if you think Harris would have. Then again, when you’re going head to head with Kobe for MVP honors, I’m sure anyone OTHER than Kidd could do it ’cause he’s so old and pathetic huh?
I imagine it’s hard for you to objectively find the issues with this team when you are so filled with hatred towards one player. The Mavs have a chance to find a coach that either suits the majority of the players they have or one that will entice the players he needs to become Mavs to suit his coaching. Which one would be best I don’t know. But I do know that taking every single opportunity to bad mouth one guy ain’t gonna help anyone.
By the way, I HAVE watched and played a lot of basketball in my time and I can tell you that the last game of the regular season, the first playoff game and the third playoff game would have been like the second one where the Hornets were ‘goofin’ off’ on the Mavs by the start of the 4th if Kidd wasn’t there.
But I understand your frustration when someone who comes with a reputation doesn’t live up to expectations. Yet I thought it would be Howard that got no love rather than someone who actually cared enough to try.
By Aubrey on May 1, 2008 at 7:54:43 pm
I’m not saying harris could stop him but what he could do is make Paul play more defense…Harris is fast he likes to drive. Kidd cant shoot doesnt drive….and one or two good games out of all the games he played with us isnt saying much. Anyways if we had made Paul work harder on defense maybe he wouldnt have dominated so much on offense. You have to wear a guy out and we certainly did not do that to Paul. With Kidd Paul basically got a break everytime he was on defense. I mean if a team beats me with Kidd shooting ill take it cuz its about a .05% chance that will happen…and i look at things very objectively i dont see Kidd as a name i watch him play i dont like the way he plays therefore i dont like him…maybe its hard for u to see him as he is bc u just see him as a big name…

Rick Patino comes to mind. It is not likely he could be coaxed into trying it (NBA) again, but he would fit in nicely with what Dallas is looking for. With Boston he had too many jobs and not enough to work with.
By Jim C on May 1, 2008 at 11:23:25 pm
That’s Rick PITINO, sorry.
By mike on May 1, 2008 at 11:27:45 pm
And college coaches suck in the NBA. Please, no Rick Pitino nor John Calipari… I’d rather watch the Rockets than a Mavs team coached by one of those guys.
By mrtwister on May 2, 2008 at 5:35:51 am
Fair enough Aubrey. I just think a guy who can consistently get double figures in 3 categories deserves a lot of respect. After all, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
Different points of view. That’s cool. Good to hear he didn’t sleep with your wife after all ; - )
By mike on May 2, 2008 at 1:21:31 pm
Yeah, a guy that guided two very average New Jersey Nets teams to the Finals is terrible… the worst point guard ever. I see what you’re saying now.
By MJnic on May 16, 2008 at 11:11:45 pm
Does anyone have the mpeg or any soundbite of Josh Howard saying “They went up and just hit the side of the rim or went in and out. You can’t control what the ball do. Crazy, man. Y’all hilarious.” PLEASE MAKE IT AVAILABLE
