Mavericks 2008/09 Roster Situation

April 30th, 2008 Posted in Mavs Talk

There’s a lot of talk in the comments today about potential deals the Mavericks could do this summer to get some new blood in town. In light of that here is the Mavs current roster/salary situation for the 2008-2009 season.

Under Contract
Jason Kidd - $21,372,000
Dirk Nowitzki - $18,077,904
Josh HOward - $9,945,000
Erick Dampier - $9,550,000
Jason Terry - $9,075,000
Jerry Stackhouse - $7,000,000
Brandon Bass - $826,269

Player Option
Eddie Jones - $2,000,000

Free Agents
Devean George - Bird Free Agent
Antoine Wright
Juwan Howard
Malik Allen
JJ Barea
Jamaal Magloire
Tyronn Lue

When a team over the salary cap, which includes the Mavs, makes a trade the incoming value of players cannot exceed 125% plus $100,000 of the outgoing value. The ESPN Trade Machine is a great tool to see what trades would or would not work. It’s also a great way to waste a couple hours at work.

    Rebuild with youth….
Portland gets : Dirk and Stack
Dallas gets : Oden, Outlaw, Webster and Raef

Works in the trade checker and would give the team a young nucleus to rebuild.

  3. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 1:59:40 pm

Dump salary and get expiring contracts…

New York gets Damp, Josh Howard and JET

Dallas gets Marbury, Malik Rose and Nate Robinson. ALL EXPIRING !

Yes the players we recieve are not as good as we give but we dump salary and Marbury and Robinson will be fine backups behind Kidd while Mavs wait on salaries to expire.

  4. By Dez on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:15:46 pm

That Portland trade will never work. Why would they give up the number one overall pick of the 2007 draft for 2 aging players?

  5. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:23:14 pm

Dez- Its wishful thinking. They would really have to want Dirk bad to do this.

  6. By jshcmp on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:23:47 pm

I thought about the Knicks too, but I was reminded that they want their expiring contracts so they can try for Lebron.

Cleveland might be willing to move Wally (expiring)
Maybe you could work a deal with the Bulls for Gooden (expiring)
Al Harrington could also be an option.

    Mavs suck for life……….

Hire Isaiah Thomas and trade J-Kidd to INdiana for Tinsley. Trade Nowitzki for Iguodala….good trades.

  8. By Hemp on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:40:44 pm

and dump howard for a pair of 1st round picks. That will solidify their bench.

Definitely get rid of Dampier. I would say trade him to NJ for Diop, if NJ would do that. $11.5 million for an aging, slow Center?!?!?!? Trade him to the Clippers and get Quetin Ross, i say….

  9. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:41:19 pm

GSW : Baron Davis & Al Harrington w/Picks

    Dal: Dirk & Jet

Maybe this would shake things up?

  10. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:44:00 pm

    Hemp-Diop is a free agent…no trade needed.
Check out suggested trades in the trade checker at http://www.realgm.com

  11. By ihatekidd on Apr 30, 2008 at 2:44:46 pm

NOOO haha Baron maybe but never Al Harrington especially 4 Dirk and Jet

  12. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 3:17:43 pm

ihatekidd - Harrington would be a temporary pf not a long term solution at the four. Terry has 4 years left and Harrington only has two. This part of the trade would be to get out from Terry’s contract.

  13. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 3:26:23 pm

Cleveland : Wally Szczerbiak and Eric Snow maybe some picks

Dallas : Josh Howard and Erick Dampier

Mavs get out of salaries and Clevland gets much better.

  14. By Brian on Apr 30, 2008 at 5:42:08 pm

Most of these suggestions are ridiculous, no offense meant.

    Some possibilities-

Josh Howard, Brandon Bass, and a some draft picks for Melo.

Kidd and a future pick for Michael Redd and Desmond Mason. Kidd wouldn’t be happy about this, but Milwaukee will be able to get below the salary cap with this move and be active in free agency the next year. And Dirk gets a shooter to punish those double teams. But we are stuck with JET playing point again or finding a PG with our Mid-level exception.

Depending on the Knicks pick in the upcoming draft- if it’s (5-10), that pick+Jamal Crawford for Josh Howard.

Not too much flexibility though, since Damp’s contract is pretty much untradeable, and we have very few movable assets on our team.

  15. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 5:46:40 pm

Josh Howard and Bass does not work in the trade checker. I assume someone would have to be sign and trade. I would like to see Melo in Dallas but why would Denver want Howard?

  16. By Brian on Apr 30, 2008 at 6:02:01 pm

Because they are in need of a shake up too. And there owner isn’t a big fan of having such a big payroll. They need to get some major help on their perimeter D, and Howard is one of the better two-way players out there. Of course something more enticing would have to be included to actually make the deal happen, like Bass and a future round 1 pick. If we got Melo though, and if D’Anonti gets fired (like it is being speculated right now) and we are able to get him, we would be the Suns 2.0. Of course we’d have no bench, and would have to get someone useful in free-agency (something we haven’t been able to do for the last 2 years minus Bass).

  17. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 6:10:53 pm

Melo+Dirk+Kidd with D’antoni next year would be a fun regular season team to watch. I don’t see the team as championship caliber but the season would be entertaining.

  18. By Aubrey on Apr 30, 2008 at 8:42:59 pm

ok hi T how do u expect to get melo???? Where is this magical world where there is no cap cuz thats not happening….second players overpaid=Kidd, terry, Howard, Damp, Stack, did i mention Jason Kidd!!!!! I mean honestly no one is going to trade with us unless we give up Dirk…of course he’ll prolly soon force a trade to go to a team that might actually win a championship!!!!

  19. By Aubrey on Apr 30, 2008 at 8:44:07 pm

Personaly i’d get rid of Kidd but no one but Dallas is dumb enough to pay a 36 year old, not in his prime, overrated point guard 21 million!!!

  20. By Spurred1 on Apr 30, 2008 at 9:14:45 pm

Is Ron Artest a possibility at all? I would not want Melo on the team. Let’s be honest, no one is going to want Howard after his amazing lapses in judgment. Smoking pot is fine, but talking about it on the radio before a game is dumb.I don’t know what is going through his head. Damp-only Cuban and Isiah Thomas are stupid enough to want him. Terry isn’t awful, but not great either. I’m thinking Cuban will trade Dirk for some young pieces and start rebuilding. Dirk is the only one of value that most teams are going to be interested in. I don’t want to see Dirk go,but it looks like a strong possibility.

  21. By Aubrey on Apr 30, 2008 at 9:28:13 pm

Ron Artest is nothing but problems that all we need more problems…and Dirk is our team hes the only person we have worth anything…what was stupid was giving up our young players and draft picks for Kidd. But now we have to live w/ the bad decisions they made!!!

  22. By T on Apr 30, 2008 at 9:56:32 pm

Aubrey - Getting Melo was Brian’s idea. I was just suggesting it would be nice if possible. The trade does not work in the trade checker anyway. There is no point suggesting trades that don’t work in the trade checker or with a sign and trade. The only trades I like would be for youth or salary cap relief to make a run for Boozer in 2009 or LeBron James or Chris Bosh in 2010. Aquiring youth to develop should be the focus such as Brandon Bass for example. The days of signing has beens needs to stop.

  23. By Brian on May 1, 2008 at 2:45:16 am

“The trade does not work in the trade checker anyway. There is no point suggesting trades that don’t work in the trade checker or with a sign and trade.”

Why? Since when did GM’s only use ESPN’s trade machine to see if a trade could be possible or not? Ironing out the details is something that might require a sign and trade of someone like Malik Allen or Wright, or someone from Denver’s end but the fact that any deal doesn’t line up perfectly doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Otherwise trades just wouldn’t happen.

As for trying to get sufficiently underneath the cap to make a run at Boozer or even Lebron James or Chris Bosh in 2010, that idea is pretty far fetched. Mavs currently have the biggest team payroll in the league. Finley’s contract will come off the books next year (which helps alot), but Dirk and Damp alone account for over half of what the salary cap was set at this year. Damp’s contract is unmoveable, and trade dirk and who the hell is going to want to come play for the mavs?

I say Cuban needs to try and find a way to keep the Mavs competitive right now, and not waste the few good years Dirk has left. I mean, Dirk is still a top ten player in the league. He might be no Lebron James, Tim Duncan, or Kobe Bryant but he’s better then most of the other alternatives.

    As for Aubrey’s question-
“ok hi T how do u expect to get melo???? Where is this magical world where there is no cap cuz thats not happening” Um Melo only makes around 3.5 million more a year than Josh Howard, you don’t think that aspect of the trade could be overcome?

  24. By Aubrey on May 1, 2008 at 12:13:09 pm

What about Kidd’s huge contract…is he really worth the money he is getting…HECK NO!!!! Here is the thing how are we going to get Melo and get rid of Howard Brian please let me know this could be interesting…

  25. By T on May 1, 2008 at 2:40:13 pm

Any trade might work. Never say never. The Lakers got Gasol for nothing…if that is possible any trade is. The only thing is I read a rumor somewhere that certain GMs will not trade with Cuban. Mavs and many other teams could and would have given up much more than the Lakers.

  26. By T on May 1, 2008 at 2:47:47 pm

I do not really believe that the Mavs even attempt to get under the cap to make a run at a free agent. They have a win now mentality and would not tank next two seasons to do so. I really believe in order to improve this team no one should be untouchable. If Dirk was still 24yrs old I would say he is untouchable, but if the right offer came along for a younger star that they could build around the next 8 or 9 years why would they pass it up?

  27. By Brian on May 1, 2008 at 3:26:25 pm

    T said-

Of course not, but who would give away a younger star for an aging one? Those deals rarely happen. And the only teams that would do it are teams that could win a championship right after making that trade.

    Aubrey said-
“Here is the thing how are we going to get Melo and get rid of Howard Brian please let me know this could be interesting…”

It all depends on if Denver is looking to trade Melo or not. It was released today that he was over the limit, so maybe Denver is starting to get sick of the occasional problems Melo has gotten himself into (Melo has gotten himself into way more stickier situations than Howard has, Howard was generally viewed as an upstanding citizen in the NBA before he made the mistake of saying he did what a whole lot of other NBA players do).

  28. By mike on May 1, 2008 at 5:16:33 pm

You people that think trading Dirk is A)going to happen, and/or B)a smart move, are pretty stupid.

  29. By mike on May 1, 2008 at 5:17:36 pm

And Jason Kidd’s not going anywhere. Get used to it. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean he’s not good.

  30. By T on May 1, 2008 at 6:26:03 pm

Teams that are close to making the playoffs or a player away from a championship that would trade a young rising star for Dirk. Mavs traded Harris for Kidd. The Celtics traded Al Jefferson to Minnesota for Garnett. It would have to be that kind of deal. Dirk will not be playing at this level much longer. Dirk is my favorite player to watch since Ro Blackman and I would hate to see him go. But the reality is that the Mavs need to at least consider trading him at the peak of his career to recieve the maximum trade value possible. If the Mavs could put a team around Dirk next season they should keep him. I just don’t thnk the Mavs have the trade bait to get quality players around Dirk while he is at his peak.

  31. By T on May 1, 2008 at 6:42:35 pm

    Trade idea:

    Dallas — Dirk Nowitzki

    for

Milwaukee — Michael Redd & Yi Jianlian

Milwaukee in the East would defintely be a contender with Dirk and Dallas would have a young player in Yi who may or may not become a star. Its risky but at this point maybe worth it.

  32. By Aubrey on May 1, 2008 at 6:56:59 pm

Ok did Kidd sucking it up this season not make anyone realize hes washed up. His pathetic performance int he playoffs was sickening…his inability to take big shots…the incredible way he disappears at the end of games….get over the name and realize he’s not good and we made a big mistake trading for him. We can’t get a team around Dirk b/c we are paying Jason Kidd 21 mil to do nothing!!!! Devin Harris probably got a good laught watching the mavs struggle and look so pathetic!!!!

  33. By mike on May 1, 2008 at 11:59:49 pm

hahahaha… okay, if you say so.

  34. By mike on May 2, 2008 at 12:46:12 am

Okay, I back off about the stupid comment.. that was pretty rude. But it’s just not very smart to even think about trading away your franchise player; at the moment, Dirk IS the Dallas Mavericks. Have you watched the games that he’s been out with an injury/suspension? The rest of the team looks terrible out there. He is such a unique, talented player and I don’t see anybody else out there worth trading him for(via trades that GMs wouldn’t laugh at… in other words, no Kobe for Dirk).

  35. By T on May 2, 2008 at 4:27:46 pm

I think Josh Howard is the cancer of the team. Really if the Mavs could replace him at the sf position with anyone else it would be a huge step. Many players could put up better offensive stats with the same number of shots. I am no expert, but Howard’s defense does not appear to be as good as it used to be. Maybe the Mavs could get Antwan Jamison for the MLE. He will be 32 in June and I am not sure what his market value is at that age. He could start for a couple years at sf while a younger player develops. He would be a defensive liability but an offensive threat and should open up Dirk more than Howard does.

  36. By T on May 2, 2008 at 4:51:08 pm

Maybe Jo HO for Andre Igoudala ? (restricted free agent sign and trade) Mavs would have to throw in someone else unless this trade was wanted and pushed by Igoudala. Maybe throw in Bass or Terry to make the deal more attractive.

  37. By T on May 2, 2008 at 5:01:53 pm

Another maybe??? JO HO + sign and trade filler for Wally Szczerbiak and a first round pick

  38. By vane003 on Jun 9, 2008 at 7:15:47 am

trade damp, jet, josh and stack for a solid SG that can play SF.. maybe kevin martin…he is a good recipe for j-kidd..plus SF that can defend and good in moving without a ball maybe al harrington.. plus athletic center.. total revamp… just keep dirk, j-kidd, b.bass, a.wright and t.lue maybe george… OR GET A GOOD TRAINER THAT CAN ACTUALLY POLISH A PLAYER…

  39. By jam009 on Jun 9, 2008 at 7:26:13 am

its not kidd that suck this season for mavs.. its avery… he said he wanted kidd to be aggressive and look for the basket first before the pass.. what the hell… he traded devin harris when he is already looking of what he wants…

  40. By kevin on Jun 21, 2008 at 5:58:13 pm

u trade kidd to a team looking to win right away just like the mavs did last year.

trade kidd or j-ho for some picks and young players

  41. By ben on Jul 10, 2008 at 11:57:06 pm

just trade kidd hes ruining the team
trade jo-ho for melo. or trade him and a first round pick to cleveland for lebron james
