Mavs-Hornets Game 5
April 29th, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson, Mavs TalkPossibly the last game Avery coaches for the Mavericks tonight. At this point I just want to see this team play with a little heart and not quit like they did in game four. If they do manage a win game six will be here in Dallas on Thursday night. NBAStuffer doesn’t like the Mavs chances tonight, and they’ve been pretty accurate in the playoffs so far.
Jerry Stackhouse had an interesting explanation of the player only practice that was held yesterday.
“It was just a day when we had to come together and talk among ourselves,” he said. “It’s just about bringing it to the table once the game starts. All the X’s and O’s are good, but sometimes it’s the guys coming together and figuring out what works better. We’re the ones in the game.”
Sounds to me like the guys aren’t too fond of Avery’s X’s and O’s right now.
Check out ESPN.com’s Mavericks roundtable where the second question is whether or not Avery will be fired. Mark Stein, who still lives in Dallas, has this to say about the situation.
Avery is definitely out. Can’t blame him exclusively for the New Orleans series but this has been building for months. Coach and the owner don’t have the same relationship they once had and the authoritarian intensity that was such a successful contrast to Don Nelson’s style early in the Avery Era is too easily tuned out now. Throw in the scars that linger from the playoff losses to Miami and Golden State and it’s clearly time for a change.
Go Mavs.

I really hope the players just try and do what they want and not listen to Avery.
I still don’t get why dirk and kidd don’t do pick and rolls like nash and dirk did years ago. That was the bread and butter back then.
By we still have a chance! on Apr 29, 2008 at 5:11:02 pm
only way we win this game tonight is if we do the following:
keep dirk in for 40-48 minutes, keep terry on cp for majority of the game, josh howard go back to his game and not take even ONE jumpshot and only drive to the basket, stackhosue stays ON the bench, bass gets good minutes, and kidd gets the best of cp3…..this can all happen! LETS WIN THIS AND BRING IT BACK TO DALLAS! WHOS WITH ME!
By its not over on Apr 29, 2008 at 5:19:29 pm
Avery should just let the guys play their street game and do whatever it takes to win. Avery was smart by leting the guys do a player only practice.
Go Mavs!

as shitty as this whole thing has turned out to be and i’d like nothing more than for the players to take the reigns and make a complete 180..IM STILL DOWN 4 A TURNAROUND!!! GO MAVS

I still believe! Go Mavs!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! I’ve seen this happen so many times in this series, it’s just pissing me off!! Does Avery have NO concept of what a 2-for-1 is?!? We had the ball with 45 seconds left in the first quarter, and New Orleans ends up with the final shot?!? I’ll tell you why it’s happening, though… the plays take about 15 seconds to set up, alone, and then they panic to figure out how to get the ball to the basket… it just pisses me off that nobody sees that we have chance at a 2-for-1, and they have had many chances to do it in this series.
And Kidd hater, J-Kidd’s got 7 pts in the first.

I still believe… even if they lose tonight, I believe. They’ll bounce back next year. If not, I’ll still watch. Through the good an bad, the memories I have made watching all these games with my girl and my friends… the games I went to, I even won the 3D sweepstakes thing… My friends and I have some great Mavs memories. For that, I am happy. Whatever happens…. GO MAVS!

jason kidd is a joke! all he’s doing tonight (and all he’s been doing all series) is take the ball out, dribble slowly up the court, and miss shots no running no diming no anything…oh and its halftime and he has 9 POINTS (2 more points than in the 1st) AND 3 ASSISTS (as opposed 2 Paul’s 11)! they might as well pull sum guy out of NO’s crowd and let him run point

Kenny Smith titles his stupid pictures segment, same ol’ Dallas. Really it should be titled “Same ol’ Avery”. The guy is halfway out on the court barking out instructions and wasting half of the shot clock. Please fire him tomorrow.
By olddecrepitbastard on Apr 29, 2008 at 7:12:22 pm
just a question: if avery does in fact get fired (and we’re all crossing our fingers…), does that mean that you’ll have to change the name of the blog?

Ignorant Kidd hater… there’s nothing else to say about you.
By ihatekidd on Apr 29, 2008 at 7:35:00 pm
lol i guess im ignorant when my favorite team CLEARLY starts doing worse and gets raped by teams over .500 after acquiring an old, past his prime, shell of his former self PG who has done absolutely nothing productive but get pwned by Chris Paul in his first playoff appearance as a Maverick (but can score 27 points against the exact same team just days before?)…yea, I’m ignorant
By Tristan on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:18:46 pm
And… why was Stackhouse on the court today? Seriously, the poor playing was one thing - but handing them a free throw to stop the Mavs momentum? Sigh
By TripleDoubleKidd on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:19:08 pm
This is starting to get to be bullshit im sick and tired of seeing the same old thing especially after being TITLE contenders then winning 67 games only to be knocked out in the First Round not only once but twice u gotta be kidding me. The only excuse there is, is being out coached an thats what happened against the heat an then golden state. An the only way the kidd trade is going to help us is if Howard gets over his pity party an start playing like the Allstar he WAS. but i still got faith in Mark Cuban he’s pulled us out of situtations worse than this i just hope he does it sooner rather than later.
By TripleDoubleKidd on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:26:08 pm
Oh yea dont be hating on kidd, hes only as good as his supporting cast is an josh howard is to busy cryin over harris leaving an stack has been hurt an Dirk cant do everything Jones was a bust an JET does what he can do but hes just not that scorer that j-ho was!!!!
By ihatekidd on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:35:10 pm
anotherr season wasted…another year of taking shit from all my friends
By Fatflipguy on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:40:25 pm
Are you kidding me? The secret gameplan and let Stackhouse bring the ball up the court in the first half. He has a Hall Of Fame point guard in Kidd and they run freaking high school plays. Bring ball up court, pass, and cut. Seriously, does it take just a normal fan to know this or is Avery just so damn stubborn. Secondly, Stackhouse is still recovering from his injury and hasnt done squat. Yes, he did give them some fire but he’s still not ready to play. George gave the energy and hes better on defense then Stack. How many games does it take to figure out that Damp can’t guard West. FIRE AVERY!

I hear you “ihatekidd”. 8 years of disappointment, however this can only mean good things: Such as firing Avery Johnson, or perhaps Mark Cuban will finally wake up and take his head out of his ass.
By CB on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:43:04 pm
Maybe he will take Stackhouse with him wherever he goes because he sure loves Stack!
By Rishabh on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:44:18 pm
brandon bass impressed me so much tonight. even when his whole team was scrambling to get back on defense he stayed down in the post and got one of the toughest offensive rebounds and putbacks i have ever seen. Next years team
Starters:
Kidd
Jet
Marion
Nowitzki
Dampier
Bench:
Howard
Bass
Stackhouse
Maggette
hopefully cuban has millions stashed away to sign some all star players
By CB on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:47:28 pm
Rishabh that sounds good except Howard for Jet & Bass for Dampier. Stackhouse will be with Avery. Who will we get to coach this group?
By tani on Apr 29, 2008 at 8:57:55 pm
Even if God coaches this team, he can’t do anything with this group of players.
By ihatekidd on Apr 29, 2008 at 9:08:15 pm
yea this team’s chemistry is all f’d up this roster just needs a good changing….I know I say I hate Kidd but that’s only because he doesn’t fit in at all. If Cuban went and got some Carters and Jeffersons for him so he can do what he does best and kept Dirk, Jet, Bass, Stack (I think he deserves to stay), Josh, and maybe even Damp, I think they’d be in good shape
By captainjack on Apr 29, 2008 at 9:09:29 pm
You can’t win if you can’t stop anybody. Keep Dirk and Kidd and get rid of the rest if you can. Sure Kidd in the open court can score and he can do some other things. Dirk is a 7 footer who can drive and get good shots in the paint. But it just don’t mean squat if the other side is getting dunks and layups because the defense stinks. The Mavs have too many one dementional players. Who is their stopper? There was only one Michael Cooper, Sid Moncrief or even Bruce Bowen but even big nellie kept a Raja Bell or Greg Buckner or another 3 or 4 players who I could name who would belly up and stop the other scorer. Howard needs to be a defensive player who is the 7th man or so. He does not need to shoot the ball outside the paint. And Mr. Cuban, You are a great guy. The Mavs would have never been a factor these last years without you, but Sir, the officials hate you. And they take it out on your team. and the League office hates you. It’s just like another well known Dallas owner, Mr. Jones. There are not many people who have ever been born that were better human beings than Jerry Jones. Just a great man in many ways. But how many championships will the cowboys miss and have they missed while he tries to prove he is a “football guy”. He is not a “football guy”. And Mr. Cuban, you are not a basketball player or a coach. You do not need to be in the players faces and the coaches face and on the damn stationary bike or anywhere near this freakin team. You need to get the hell out of the t.v. screen. You need to sign the checks and the next time you are seen by the general public needs to be when your nemesis Mr. Vegas Stern hands you the championship trophy. Cause if it aint that way there will be no championship trophy. And sir, that is keepin it real. Basketball is fake anyway. The celtics and lakers have been set up to win with trades that helped only those two teams and the league. Hey, Why not take Chris Paul and Boozer and the big guy who just emerged out east there and put them on the knicks? Then you can get lots more for those 30 second spots for the panty liners and the steel belted radials.
Whatever you do. Fire Avery and let him go be the Edie Robinson of College basketball, the job he was made for. The man is no more a pro coach than Quinn Buckner was. It worked because nellie was so loose and a hard ass approach worked for awhile. Stevie Wonder could see that. What really sucks is that this team had a shot to win a couple championships and they blew it.

so the season has yet come to an end … why am i hearin all these iverson rumors ??? i actually wouldnt mind it. im up for any changes! but more importantly, who is our coach gona be?
By captainjack on Apr 29, 2008 at 10:19:03 pm
If the Mavs got Alan Iverson I would never watch them, go to their games or follow them in any way. Iverson is a loser. He is a one on one playground player. He will never accomplish squat in the context of a team game. McGrady is a loser and Vince Carter is a loser. Carmello is a loser. Tim Duncan is a winner. The only time in the last 20 years that losers of this magnitude one the title was when the heat “beat” the mavs and that was nothing more than dick bevetta and Stern sticking it up Cubans backside and breaking it off. Iverson? Practice? Practice? He may have street Cred but he is a giant LOSER.

That quote was not about not believing in coaching. What a negatively skewed view and comment by the webmaster. What Stackhouse was saying is that it doesn’t matter what the coaches do–it is the responsibility of the players to outplay the other team.
Honestly, this team reached its ceiling two years ago. It is not Avery’s fault, but I would start over. I’d trade Kidd for a first round pick to a contender like Denver or keep his expiring contract. I’d fire the coach. I’d trade Nowitzski and start over. Unfortunately, there are no good young pieces outside of Bass to work around. Fire the GM for trading your PG.
