Mavs-Hornets Game 2

April 22nd, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson, Mavs Talk

Game two tonight, post here during and after the game.

Jean-Jacques Taylor has a suggestion for Avery.

A word of advice to Avery Johnson before Game 2 of the Mavericks’ playoff series against New Orleans: Do whatever it takes to get the Mavs’ running game going.

If that means not drawing up plays for Jason Kidd while the Hornets are shooting free throws, so be it. If it means spending much of the game sitting down and observing instead of calling plays, that’s fine, too.

The Mavs won’t win if they don’t run. Their half-court offense simply isn’t good enough to get the job done.

Besides, Avery’s way hasn’t worked for a while.

And John Hollinger comments on the chess match aspect of game one.

(Side note: It’s a little too much like that, actually. From sticking Jannero Pargo on Jason Terry to changing his coverage on Dirk Nowitzki from Wednesday’s approach to the mysterious absence of hard traps in the backcourt on Paul, it seemed Scott was playing solitaire chess in Game 1.)

Stackhouse is staying in the starting lineup tonight. Can’t wait to see what adjustments Avery has made.

Go Mavs.

I wonder if Avery could perhaps “Aspire Higher” and not be the worst in-game coach in the league. He can’t make a defensive adjustment to save his life. This is the third straight play-off series that a strong guard (Wade, Davis and now Paul) has single handedly murdered the Mavericks. To some degree, you put that on the players, I’m putting it on the coach.

AND CAN JOSH HOWARD NOT TAKE THAT HORRIBLE SHAKE-AND-BAKE 17 FOOTER??!?! He makes it with no consistency. He used to be my favorite player because he did all the dirty work, tough boards, diving on the floor, keeping the ball alive. Now? He does none of that, and while his point totals have gone up (and his shooting percentage down), the fire in his game is gone and it shows.

Stackhouse needs to take this season off. He has just been aweful. I can’t even go on. I remember getting frustrated in the playoff series versus the Chris Webber Kings because we just weren’t good enough. Now? I’m sick because we are good enough, we just have the worst coaching staff in the playoffs. FIRE AVERY.

I’m not watching the game so forgive me if this isn’t right but…….did Kidd get benched for a turnover?

And then Avery put Eddie Jones on Paul.

Bravo Avery, you are a genius!!!

our defensive coach came up with some great adjustments as the 67 points allowed in the first half show. are you kidding me?

  9. By Kirk on Apr 22, 2008 at 7:41:42 pm

Sweet. We are down 22. There’s nothing more to be said, it’s time for Avery to go, before this series is over. And while we are at it, fire WestFAIL too, since he is horrible also. Bring back DEL HARRIS.

Why SOOOOOOOOOOOO many lineup changes all the time? Who are your top 5 guys Avery?

The guy changes the lineup at halftime. Then Devean George - not good enough to play over eddie jones in the first half - is in the game in the third.

How is George supposed to get into the flow of the game if he rides pine the whole first half?

Avery, get your sh*t together. Figure out who your best guys are and play them. This experimentation BS is getting old.

    Fire Avery

Looking ahead to next season(we are not coming back in this game, nor in this series)…

Avery needs to go. There is too much talent on this team for them to be trailing by 22 against ANY team in the NBA… it’s ridiculous. Cuban and Nellie Jr. also HAVE TO pick up another scorer in the offseason… tonight’s performance is just inexcusable. What happened to you, Josh Howard? Are you still there?

  12. By Mav in Cali on Apr 22, 2008 at 8:31:15 pm

Cuban needs to straight up fire Avery TONIGHT. This is ridiculous. The Hornets are now just toying around and embarrassing the hell out of the Mavs. Avery has completely lost this team and has completely lost any ability to coach. What pisses me off the most is that no matter how bad the Mavs get beat due to Avery’s coaching incompetence, he will NEVER take the blame or admit personal fault for not putting them in the best position to win. Just plain selfish. I’m sick of seeing him on the Mavs sideline.

    FIRE AVERY TONIGHT

Hornets are just toying with the mavs now aha!

    FIRE AVERY!

I agree that Avery must go! But this is as talented of a team as Mavs seem to think. We are old and unathletic. The back side of that bench is a joke (E.Jones, Ju.Howard, Lue, George, Magloire) and it was all Avery’s doing. He likes old untalented guys like he was at the end of his career. We have a long way to go to rebuild this roster.

  15. By Ronald on Apr 22, 2008 at 8:36:09 pm

I think I had already said this before but I’m starting to think that it might be a good thing for us to get swept… that’ll maybe wake Cuban up and finally get him to get a real coach… It’s obvious this series is over anyways…

Maybe I’m just a hopeful Mavs fan, but I just got on the bandwagon to rid Avery. Cuban, and the players are just as much to blame for the disastrous landslide the Mavs have been on for the past 2 months. Cuban was a dumbass for being so persistent to trade away your future for Jason Kidd and a pair of scrubs. As far as the players are concerned, we just straight get outhustled to every loose ball, every rebound, every play. We probably have the least hustle/fire under our ass out of every other team in the playoffs. Sure, we might have some scrubby players, but so do all of the other teams, and they still manage to get the job done. Now to Avery, why does Brandon Bass not start? Why does Malik Allen, Antoine Wright, Devean George, Juwan Howard, you know the rest, ever see the hardwood? Tell me this Mavs team couldn’t win under a coach like Popovich or Jackson. The Spurs are the most boring team in the NBA and towards the bottom of the Western playoff teams as far as talent goes, and they still win championships. It would be nice to have some first round picks coming up, but wait, we traded those for Kidd. I say get rid of everyone except Dirk and Bass, and maybe Terry if he’ll return to his old form after Avery goes because clearly, he’s been misprogrammed. I’d dump Josh Howard. He only plays the first 12 minutes anyways. Poop!

This corn pone eating, pimp ring wearing mush mouth couldn’t coach himself to take a whiz without sticking his foot in the toilet and letting it drizzle down his leg. Put him and the team out of their misery.FIRE THE BUM and let Dirk coach!!! This is Nelson’s revenge.

  18. By Mavsfan on Apr 22, 2008 at 9:53:53 pm

Avery Johnson must go. He made Mavs an old, slow team with no heart, no passion, no team spirit and no pride. He completely and successfully destroyed Mavs.

  19. By FreeDirk on Apr 23, 2008 at 12:52:14 am

Avery’s gotta go, yes. He needs to go pay some dues as an assistant. I truly never thought it possible to see such egregious mismanagement of a roster from an NBA coach. Why the hell are we paying Tryonn Lue, when Avery is obviously determined to make Jason Terry a point guard?

Fire him, but only on principle, because it won’t be enough to “save” this franchise (again). Mark Cuban lost Steve Nash, pushed Don Nelson away, and summarily executed the great hope this franchise once had. It’s all on him.
