Avery can’t really mean this, right?

April 14th, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson

This has to be a joke by Avery explaining last night’s failure. He had this to say about Gary Payton being at the game last night.

“I don’t know if Payton should have showed up tonight, because when he got that standing ovation, that really spurred them on more,” Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said. “I wish he would have watched it on television.”

Actually, even if it was a joke, there’s no excuse for a head coach to be saying something like that at this time of the season. Basically he’s saying that the Mavs can’t play against a team that has a hot crowd behind it. That’s going to be a big problem when there’s no chance of having home-court advantage until the Finals at the earliest.

It’s just something that shouldn’t be said after a loss to a team that has the second worst record in the NBA.

Payton has every right to show up in any arena, especially the one he build his reputation and in its possible last home game. If Avery’s disheartened just by this, how can he handle the playoffs?

I’m not buying the whole home court advantage. I think that any good team should be able to win at home and on the road. Avery needs to put all those excuses aside and just prepare for the playoffs. Losing to Seattle isn’t the way to do it. I’m hoping that they at least win against NO going into the playoffs. If they plan on throwing the game away then please rest the starters. I’m tired of Dirk playing 40mins during these games.

Nothing and no one should have the power to help the Sonics, who are doormats, beat the Mavs. All this fake positivity mumbo jumbo by Avery and Cuban are really starting to piss me off. Are they seeing something I’m not seeing? What can we possibly be feeling good about heading into the playoffs after losing to two teams that aren’t IN the playoffs?

You know what guys… at this point, I’m starting to actually feel quite proud of the Mavs (The players that is)… It might sound strange I know but if you think about it, everyday that goes by now proves to us that all that the Mavs have been able to accomplish the last few seasons (i.e, finals appearance, 67 wins, MVP for their best player etc..), they accomplished it DESPITE Avery Johnson… One can only wonder what it would have been had we had a decent coach…

God help the Mavs if they meet Utah in the Playoffs. Home court advantage is HUGE with them, Playoffs or not.

I say let the guy say what he want. Spurs own anyway. Did you read Avery’s new book? Not that great.

Yet another dumb a** comment by AJ, add it to the list. I really hope players don’t let his talk get into there head at times.

It’s just not surprising anymore to hear this crap from him. Avery has a long line of excuses as to why we lose games, and none of them are ever his fault, in fact, he doesn’t ever take partial blame for anything, like benching Damp in the 4th vs portland. That scares me more than anything come playoff time, b/c it shows that Avery still hasn’t learned how important Damp is to our winning big games.

One thing I gave noticed lately (2nd half of the Jazz game, and the Seattle game) is that teams are playing more zone and we look just as lost as we did against GS last yr in the playoffs. I think whoever we play, will play a lot of zone and we just look lost out there against a zone. Avery has had 1 full yr to figure out how to beat a zone, and we don’t look like we have spent 10 min all season trying to figure it out.

I think we need a new post about the Warriors not making the playoffs. :D Made my day.

Awfully talented team in Golden State that didn’t make the playoffs. Starting point guard has played in every game. Could it be coaching? You really don’t want Avery to go to some other team and figure it out. Avery has been “cutting his teeth” for three years and winning 70% of his games.

I have been a lifelong Maverick fan but very realistic. I love Dirk, but last year he was the best player on the leagues best team. Has Avery been carrying Dirk for over two years? Did Dirk have a low post game prior to Avery’s arrival? Over the past seven games he has played more like an MVP than at any point in his nine year career.

IF Avery is fired please don’t mention the likes of Rick Carlisle, Jeff Van Gundy or Mike Fratello. Give me a coach that has won a championship. The only thing Avery hasn’t done is win a championship. You shouldn’t ask for anything less.

    RIP:

Monta Ellis, Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrinton, Andris Biedrins.

One-year wonders… well, more like one month wonders.

YOU MFERS ARE MORONS! You think anybody’s gonna remember that the Warriors didn’t make the playoffs the year after they completed the biggest upset in NBA History!?!?!?! The only people that will are you MFFL’s who try to justify it to yourself “oh the Warriors upset over us didn’t really mean much”

Um, it didn’t mean much. Your rainbow-Warriors choked in the very next round against Utah.
