Mavs beat the Sonics, yay!
April 8th, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson, Game Recap
Well, the Mavericks beat the Sonics tonight in a game that neither team looked too terribly interested in playing. The Sonics are probably much more interested in arranging moves from Seattle to Oklahoma City than playing ball right now and they should have been put away early. So of course the Mavs come out looking like they forgot how to shoot the ball.
It stayed a close game until the fourth quarter when Dirk helped put away the Sonics. Prior to that he had been struggling, going 2-10 from the field the first three quarters. It would’ve been nice for him to play a little less or not at all tonight, but Avery felt it necessary to play him 26 minutes.
Brandon Bass looks like an important part of this team again. After barely playing against the Warriors and Lakers he’s played 24 minutes in the last two games against the Suns and Sonics finishing with 19 and 13 points. It’ll be interesting too see how long Avery feels like making him a part of the rotation this time.
At the end of the day though they got the job done and outscored the Sonics by 9 in the fourth and took the game 99-83. They’ve now won 5 of 6 and seem to be getting in a little roll heading to the end of the season.
One big positive from this team since acquiring Kidd is that they haven’t lost any of these games played against weaker teams since he arrived. Being able to do that is the reason they’re going to make it to the playoffs. As Denver has shown lately losing to these ding-dong teams can really hurt your playoff chances.

The Nuggets might just blow that 8th seed, and gift-wrap it to the Warriors(who look like a first round flame-out, anyhow). There is absolutely no leadership on that Denver team; Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony were outshined late in the game by rookies Kevin Durant and Jeff Green! Things are actually look up for the Mavs; 2 wins basically wraps up that No. 7 spot.
