Tuesday night stuff

April 1st, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson, Mavs Talk

Amazingly Dirk is now listed as day-to-day. If he does come back tomorrow night that has to be the quickest healing of a high-ankle sprain ever. Most guys are out a month at the least.  I guess there’s something to all those crazy exercises Holger puts Dirk through after all. And considering how bad the injury looked when it first happened the team’s lucky he’ll be playing at all before next season begins.

Here’s what Avery has to say about Dirk coming back and the team making the playoffs.

“We are in control of our own destiny. All we have to do is try to get better on defense and keep moving the ball on offense. If we can get some of these same performances we are getting out of our guys right now without Dirk Nowitzki, when he gets back we think we can be a pretty good team.”

He’s right, if the team can keep playing like they have, especially Kidd and Howard, then they can be a pretty good team. Probably still not good enough to get out of the first round, but maybe make the series competitive. But will Avery let those guys keep playing the same way? Or will he start being more controlling against these good teams like it seems that he has been since Kidd got here?

I don’t think we can even make the playoff. With Avery still around, we don’t have chances with the West’s tough teams. Wake up Mr. Cuban!!! Listen to the people of Dallas!!!

Mavs can win this game but at no point should they play down to the Warriors. Dampier and Magloire need to play until they foul out. Hopefully Avery does not have Josh Howard or George playing the 4 tonight.

Magloire doesn’t even recognize a basketball court when he sees one…he won’t sniff a minute of PT.

As it stands right now (of course it changes nightly in the West), the MAvs are matched up w/ San Antonio. Contrary to the national media’s ascertion that trading Diop was horrendous for the Mavs because he played Duncan and Shaq tough, anyone that watched him knows that he rarely showed up (about as much as Shawn Bradley) and generally played uninspired ball this year. Magliore’s size can be a great benefit against the plodding Spurs and Duncan / Kurt Thomas especially. He could at the very least burn his fouls and grab a few boards. He has shown that he is capable when given a chance. To not get him any playing time the last few weeks and at least see if he can be serviceable as Damp’s backup is a terrible mistake in my opinion. I will say that I don’t get to see him in practice situations like Avery does so I should give our coach the benefit of the doubt, but the amount of times I am left scratching my head saying what the F is Johnson doing, leads me to not give him that benefit.

Im sorry but ive been watching the Spurs and they are playing on a whole different level from the Mavs…a level the mavs have never reached….they would have no chance against the Spurs…the Spurs dont dont choke the Mavs do…the Spurs team from the beginning of the season and now are very diff. The Spurs tend to turn it on at the end of the season..their defense and offense are better then ive ever seen and i think they wil win it all this year.

Fire Avery, bring back Del Harris for the rest of season, Avery has taken all the fun out of the game for players and fans. I am a season ticket holder. Avery should be in San Antonio where his heart is.

Jason Kidd should be a player/manager…Wouldn’t hurt to try right?

Well id on think S.A. plans on getting rid of their hall of fame coach anytime soon…and i dont think popp wants him as the assistant coach sooooooo he’ll prolly stay here which sucks…i really have a bad feeling he’s not going anywhere next season which sucks.

I doubt Avery is gone until his contract is up. As frustating as it is to watch him make coaching mistakes over and over I don’t see any other coach doing much better with the current roster. If Avery has any basketball IQ at all he will learn from his mistakes and grow as a coach. If not, he wont get another contract here. Del Harris is missed on the bench. It seems like Avery was more stable with Del helping out.

We will only win tonights game if Damp plays, and just think Avery isn’t going to wake up and realize how much better we are with Damp on the court. So good luck to Juwan Howard, I am sure he will take us to the playoffs.
