Single Elimination?

March 29th, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson

Avery had this to say before the Nuggets game about the Mavericks current position in the West.

“We’re playing single elimination.  That’s the way we’ve got to look at it.”

I guess this season is already over then?   Postings on this site, from me and the commenters, and a bunch of other people seem to think that is the case and that Mavs are going to miss the playoffs.

This morning the Mavs are 1/2 a game ahead of the Warriors for the 7th spot and only 1 game ahead of Denver for 8th.  And because of the loss Thursday night the Nuggets now have the tie-breaker if they end up with the same record for that 8th spot.  In that sense Thursday night truly was an elimination game.

You have to wonder what the players think about hearing that statement, then losing the next game.  Yes, these guys shouldn’t let something like that bother them, and it most likely doesn’t.   But still, according to what your own coach said you’ve now been eliminated from the playoffs.  Of course they haven’t actually been eliminated yet, but it looks like things are coming to that point with 8 of their last 11 against teams better than .500.

Sometimes i wonder if Harris isn’t sitting up in New Jersey and smirking and thinking see ya’ll it wasn’t me. Cuban needs to sell the team and we need a new coach and new management!!! Avery has sho our players confidence. And worst of all they were all involved in getting over the hill outdated Jason Kidd….that alone should get you fired!!!

The Mavs will definitely be out coached by Nellie tonight. It does not matter who is on the Golden State roster because Nellie is superior to Avery. It is time for Avery to go. He took over a great team that can win in spite of him. Avery would be much better off going to San Antonio as one of Pop’s assistant coaches. Dallas needs a creative coach that can adapt. It looks like this year because of Avery our post season will be hoping for good luck with the ping pong balls. This team will never be championship caliber with Avery as a coach. Mavs could add Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Avery would figure out a way to lose with them.

I do not think Popp would take Avery….I dont think the most winning franchise in sports wants a coach who royally screws up a very talented team.

Get Avery out of there! I’d get rid of Howard next followed by Kidd.

This team needs toughness inside. Let’s get in the lottery and get Physco-T!!! That guy could set the tone for the future of the Mavs.

I actually thought Roy Hibbert was a great prospect… until that game against Davidson. Not a good way to end your college career.
