This season is over, part 2
March 23rd, 2008 Posted in Game Recap
The Mavericks had a 54-42 lead with 6:24 left in the 3rd quarter. Then in the next 4 minutes 54 seconds this team’s season was effectively done. In that 4:54 the Mavs gave up a 19-0 run and lost Dirk for who really knows how long.
While losing Dirk is the most important story of the game, this team does nothing without him, but I’ll get to that in a post tomorrow, the 19-0 run was pathetic.
Avery’s low point of the run came 2 minutes into it when the Mavericks didn’t have a point guard or center on the floor. That’s right, both Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, as well as Tyronn Lue, were all sitting on the bench. The five players on the floor were Stack, Josh Howard, Devean George, Dirk and Brandon Bass. That was Avery’s grand idea to stop at what the moment was a 5-0 run. Yeah, Tony Parker was out of the game, but that lineup leaves Stack, at least I think it’d be him, to run the offense. Granted, when you’re running nothing but iso half-court sets you don’t really need a PG on the floor, but there is no way that will ever make sense to me.
There were also two timeouts called by the Mavs during the run, one right after it started and one after it was a 13-0 run after Dirk got hurt. Whatever Avery was saying to the guys during these timeouts obviously didn’t motivate them too much.
All in all if was yet another horrible showing against a team with a .500 or better record. The Mavs are now 0-8 against these teams since the Kidd trade. The time for “moral victories” and showing effort is over and wins are needed by this team now. They are only 2 games ahead of Denver for the last playoff spot. They have two games against Golden State coming up in the next five, which could very well leave them in 8th in the West.
And now potentially being without Dirk for 2 or more weeks this team doesn’t look like they’re going to improve their fortunes against these teams anytime soon. And the bad news? Eight of their last twelve are against teams better than .500.

Someone needs to tell J-Ho he sucks as a jump shooter and to get to the basket every time he touches the ball. And Avery has to be the worst coach in the NBA!
By Coach K on Mar 24, 2008 at 5:57:58 am
Fire Avery and I’ll take his place! Are you listening Mark?! I’ll make J-Ho the best slasher in the NBA and not those ineffective jump shot! Jerry Stack will have new spring just like his good ol’ 76ers days. Kidd will be freely distributing the ball like an hall of famer truly is and The Jet will keep on flying…Blah! Blah! Blah! If Avery will stay, so does the losing streak. STOP THE BLEEDING NOW!!!!!

I blogged until my fingers were tired once I heard the rumors about the ridiculous Kidd trade. Immediately after the trade I asked the team for my season ticket money refunded for the remainder of the season and got no response. I knew this would happen. Never has the league had a more overrated player than Kidd. Those of you who think Kidd can play obviously don’t have NBA League Pass (this must include Avery, Cuban and Nelson). If you had watched you would know that the guy has been pathetic for years. This trade is the steal of the century for the Nets. The fact that anyone in the Mavs organization would want Kidd (even if you got him for nothing) means they should all be fired and Cuban should sell the team. By the way I wanted to vote for the lottery pick and firing Avery. You didn’t give me that option.

The Mavs need to trade the chokes (Dirk and JoHo) and the thugs (Jet and Stack) and rebuild.
By WyldMavsFan on Mar 24, 2008 at 10:20:55 am
The biggest problem isn’t Avery anymore, it’s getting Dirk healty for the playoffs (if we make it). the problem is now, if Dirk doesn’t play, it gives Avery yet another excuse as to why we are losing. It’s like a reprieve for Avery.
We lost this game in the 3rd quarter. When we were going on our big run to start the 3rd quarter, everything was going great. Popovich called a TO, made some subs, and it still wasn’t working. Stack made 2 big 3’s, Damp’s D on Duncan (illteration) was great, Kidd’s D on Parker was great, we were playing very well on both ends and up 54-42 5 min into the half. So then Avery decides to start coaching. He then decides it’s time to make a substitution. What coach makes a subtitution when there team is in the middle of a huge run. He took Damp out and Duncan in the game to get Duncan on Dirk and exploit that matchup (it did work in the 1st half). However, Pop being a better coach than Avery, he put Duncan on Kidd (he dared Kidd to do something) and he didn’t do anything, Bowen on Dirk. and now he just took out our big man and here comes the Spurs. Duncan took over, Dirk got hurt and he never had a chance.
Why would Avery make a substitution in the middle of a huge and game defining run?
FYI, does anybody know what the mavs playoff record is on GAME 1’s since Avery has been the head coach?
THE ANSWER IS 2-5. 5 OF THE THOSE GAMES WERE AT HOME. 1 OF THOSE WINS WAS AGAINST A TERRIBLE MEMPHIS TEAM. THAT IS WHY HE SHOULD BE FIRED, AND WHY I CAN’T WAIT TO OWN A FIRE AVERY T-SHIRT.
i could go on, but i will leave it at that.

Anybody want a mulligan on the Kidd trade now??….the Mavs are done even if they manage to sneak into the playoffs. Their offense is truly offensive, and Kidd makes Harris look like the second coming of Jerry West in outside shooting touch. The Mavs mortgaged the future for Kidd and will have nothing to show for it other than an old washed up player. Why did they think that Kidd would work with this collection of players….he needs athletic players around him…not stuck in the mud jump shooters! Here is hoping that Dirk stays out and they someone hit it big in the lottery as the Mavs need some big infusion of young talent. By the way, does anyone miss assistant coach Dale Harris!

By DC on Mar 24, 2008 at 3:45:26 pm
First, this is my first time at this site and I love it. If you had not created this, I would have. I used to be a die hard Mavs fan but over the last 2 years, it’s slowly but surely dissipated at the same rate as our offense.
When can we agree that the Avery Johnson experiment has failed and should come to an end? The Mavericks are not getting better as time progresses and the only person you can blame is Avery. When he took over for Nelson, he was pretty much GIVEN a top-3 team. The fact that he won so many games early and won Coach of the Year can be attributed to the team and not as much to him. It’s great that we got to the Finals against the Heat, but we lost. And then we lost to the Warriors. You can blame the team, but I blame the coach.
Look at what we have become. What exactly is AVERY-brand basketball? Our offense went from one of the most exciting and impactful with Nelson to this slow, deliberate, and predictable mess with Avery. I don’t know about you, but I absolutely hate our offense now. It consists of too many isolation plays to Dirk and Stack, forcing them to create their own TOUGH shot while the other four on the court just stand around. Where is the ball movement? Where is the player movement? It’s non-existent. Even the Spurs don’t play as slow and ugly as we do. And you can’t blame our players. They might not have the best talent, but they’re following Avery’s orders.
So the question goes back to what is AVERY-brand basketball? The answer, I don’t know. Our defense really isn’t that much better than it used to be. Our offense is worse. Avery had his chance, but he’s a rookie coach. He had no experience and it is showing. I don’t know if the Mavericks are regressing but we certainly are not getting better. Cuban would not accept this kind of performance from someone leading his business and he shouldn’t accept it for his Mavericks. I know everyone loves Avery but it’s time to move on. Time to bring in someone with proven experience who can use our talent and maximize their potential.
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 4:56:56 pm
Fuller=idiot its not the one game its the 8 other games they have lost to teams over .500!!!! Kidd is pathetic he has no jump shot cant finish lay ups, free throws arent great, defense is slow, and he cant run a half court offense. Also, now no Dirk which means Bass starts, if damp gets in foul trouble now who do we have Jawan Howard. I pray no other team ever has to see the day Juwan Howard and jason Kidd are on the floor together, cuz i have lived to see it and its ugly!!!! Anyone who thinks the Kidd trade was good is a fool!!! I just hope Harris becomes the point guard i know he can be!!!
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 5:04:11 pm
Israel Jho and Stack are not thugs the whole nuggets team now those are thugs!!! And Dirk is a great player who besides the mishap of the 2006 championship i would want on my team!! The problem is Kidd and the coaching….dont blame all the problems on the players!!!
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 6:18:21 pm
btw dirk and the jet (and in a way stack) have been as clutch as you can be as of late. yes they still miss shots and we don’t win, but c’mon they have been clutch. i will agree with j-ho though. he sucks.
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 6:28:19 pm
i can’t believe all this kidd is not good crap either. kidd is good. avery just has no set way of coaching. he is experimenting. he is trying to find his own way of doing things. but he has nothing. he doesnt want to run nelson’s offense because avery wants it to be about HIM. he wants to put together this certain way of doing things. that’s why kidd is sucking now. do we not remember when kid was considered to be an mvp not but 5 years ago for a good few years in that time period. i do. and no i’m not dreaming. yes, he’s old, but this has NOTHING to do with the kidd trade. this has something to do about Avery not knowing what to do with his offense. he substitutes more players and messes with the lineups in one game more than any coach has done all year. it’s obvious he is confused. coaching confuses him. jason kidd is NOW better than Devin and always will be. devin himself is now doing better away from Kidd and has come out and said that avery pulls it in way too much. avery, your offense sucks and the defense has never been there. spurs sucked yesterday and we somehow got beat. yes, the officiating was bullcrap but still. terrible terrible terrible.

LOL@Dirk and Jet being clutch. If they were clutch they would have never lost all those games during the time when it mattered most. The Fourth!!!!
By "Five-O" on Mar 24, 2008 at 6:52:06 pm
Can we compile a list of boneheaded moves made by Avery over the last few years? I’ll start it and these are in no particular order.
-Game 3 of NBA Finals: 1 Second left, down 2 and he has Dirk throwing in the ball - moronic
-Becoming the first coach in the history of Jason Kidd’s basketball playing career to bench him during the last few plays of a close game - ridiculous
-Last year vs Golden State: Benching Dampier for Game 1 even though he started most of the season - Credit Nellie with this one
-Refusing to double team Kobe Bryant: This happens every time we play the Lakers and Kobe goes off; The same can be said about Dwayne Wade during the Finals
-Constantly running out of timeouts. This happened in Game 5 of the Finals (I don’t care if Howard burned the TO early you always have to have extra TOs). The elite coaches in the NBA never ever run out of TOs.
By Woodrow on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:06:44 pm
Keep Avery. We need him right where he is.
Sincerely,
The Spurs
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:26:42 pm
KeepingItReal, i guess you didn’t see the game where Dirk’s and jet’s threes brought us back from a 25 point beating from the lakers? had it not been for the terrible pass from j-ho, dirk wouldve nailed the three and we would have won.
dirk and jet can be clutch, but it takes good coaching and good players to win games. no one said you have to win to be clutch. reggie miller is the most clutch player of all time and he didn’t win crap. der.
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:30:32 pm
If you are a an all star point guard whos going to the hall of fame you make it work no matter who is coaching….you atleast score then more then 5 a game the only triple double he has had is if you count turnovers. If you watch basketball and arent blind or know anything about it you would realize how overrated kidd is!!!! People that like him and think hes talented are the ridiculous ones. try watching some basketball Kidd looks like hes going to cry every game pretty sure he just realized how much he sucks. He needs to go back to the east where point guards arent as good so he can feel better abut himself.
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:31:52 pm
You forgot one of Averys dumb moves changing the line up for the 8th seed when your the 1st. Way to show them we are afraid. They change to you, you do not change for them
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:34:30 pm
to add to that in the last MINUTE, (that’s the 4th quarter “when it mattered most”) dirk and jet made THREE 3 pointers to keep us in the game. That’s not clutch? 9 points in one minute is pretty clutch to me. We also outscored the Lakers by 19 points in the second half. That’s what this site is about. We have talent, but terrible coaching in the beginning and at the end (josh chosen to throw in the ball) killed whatever we had. Clutchness+Avery=loss.
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 7:44:11 pm
hey aubrey, last time i checked, (about 2 seconds ago),
Jason Kidd is
1) third all time in TRIPLE DOUBLES.
2) second in playoffs TRIBLE DOUBLES.
3) 4 time USA Gold medal winner.
4) fifth all time in assists.
5) twelfth all time in 3-pointers mad.
6) eleventh all time in Steals.
7) one of only two players to average a triple-double the entire post season…
i’ll stop there.
Kidd is the man. This is Avery’s time to stop being jealous of Kidd and let him take this thing over while Dirk is out. This could be a blessing in disguise my friends. The team could come together, Avery if wise will let up, Kidd will get on his true game and Dirk will come back come playoff time and we will be ready to make that run.
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 8:28:23 pm
10 points 10 reb 10 assist who cares about the freaking olympics hmmmmm where have his 3 points been since hes been w/ the mavs i dont care what he was or what he did his run is over and has been for awhile. The past is the past. And if Kidd is the man tell me why we are 0-8 against teams with a winning record your an idiot
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 8:29:29 pm
come playoff time we have to make playoffs do u realize Kidd offers no offense and our only good offensive player right now is Dirk and hes out for 2 weeks do u watch the games or just like to pretend you do then voice you idiotic opinions???
By Mike Morales on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:09:08 pm
I think It’s time for Avery to go. I feel that Cuban has to make a move after the season Is over. We need a coach who Isn’t such a control freak. and the mavs could also find a bigger player for the middle.
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:09:14 pm
aubrey, you obviously read other opinions and can’t form your own. I give FACTS, not opinions. You said Kidd was overrated, but it seems that my facts I dished out for you prove otherwise. Obviously 99 percent of the world thinks so too. This guy is guaranteed Hall of Fame, and still has game. He didn’t have alot of trouble under any other coach did he? 0-8 against teams with winning records since the trade. key word “TEAMS”. This is the Dallas Mavericks, not the Jason Kidds. And am I wrong or is Kidd a) sitting on the bench when he should be out there or b) not allowed to play as he did when he gained all of these high records. ? 0-8 since the Kidd trade is something people throw around as an ignorant statistic to try and blame Kidd for this. And to say Dirk is our ONLY good offensive player right now is childish. the past two games howard and stack were the high scorers, but that’s putting it lightly. We have many offensive threats, again, this isn’t about our players, this is about Avery. take your childish banter to your myspace blog unless you want to back it up with facts.
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:10:26 pm
and mark my words. We’re going to the playoffs.
By captainjack on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:34:07 pm
From the time this site started up I have been leaving very very long posts. However this time I will just say That JaredNow and Aubrey and some of the others here are Right on. I have little to add. Since I get my posting name from Captain Jack Aubrey of the O’brian novels perhaps that is why I agree but JaredNow in particular is right on. I will say this. This is a different year. Just like it was in the NFL with the Giants coming out of nowhere. The could be wide open. It is entirely possible that the 2 weeks off could give us a rested Dirk for the playoffs. Anyone who thinks trading for Kidd was wrong in terms of being a championship contender is totaly clueless. It is quite possible the Dirk thing could force a bench to emerge. It could also move up the timetable for Kidd’s adjustment. Dirk is already playing well with Kidd. The key to it all is Cuban. If he steps up now and gives Avery the pink slip I think the mavs have as good a chance as anyone except the Spurs and the Pistons. Yes they been losing. But every game has been super close and with excellent teams and with the mavs playing with no idenity and a obvious feud triangle between Kidd, avery and Cuban. They have still been in each game. They also have got zero breaks from the refs—and as My dear departed grama used to tell me–the sun don’t shine on the same dogs ass all the time. And I promised this would be short—I have not givein up yet—If this team gels they could make a deep run. Tony Cubes–fire AVery, as one of the fellas above said, the experiement did not work, Let him go stand and yell the whole game at div II kids. Give the keys to Jason Kidd - what have you got to lose? Go Mavs
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:40:06 pm
ok i dont think anyone is getting my point if we dont have Dirj we dont win if we dont win GS and Denver will go ahead of us that makes us number 9 and therefore we dont make playoffs, so a rested Dirk wont matter cuz we wont be there!!!
By Aubrey on Mar 24, 2008 at 9:42:16 pm
They gave Kidd the keys and he did nothing Avery let him him play and he stunk hes had time to adjust and hes done nothing…even the press is doing him so i think Kidd should prolly retire asap and do us all a favor cuz at the end of the day hes not worth 17 mil…
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 11:35:28 pm
First of all, Avery hasn’t given Kidd the keys. Not even close. We will see what happens tomorrow against the Clippers. But to echo CaptainJack, here’s my thinking, and it’s more than wishful thinking—What the heck does every team in any league say? The regular season doesn’t matter. This is true in so much that you actually get to the playoffs. So hear this-The mavs the last two years ruled in the regular season and fell short in the end come playoff time. Yes, they made it to the finals but they blew it. Maybe they WERE on burnout mode. Maybe they flew threw like the Cowboys did and when it came time for business they couldn’t make it happen because for whatever reason, dominating the regular season put some sort of spin come playoff time. I mean, look at Golden State last year. They made it in the playoffs by winning their last 9 games if I’m not mistaken (if not their butts were on the line and fighting for the playoff spot)…Then they come in and it was onslaught time vs the best record in the league. There IS a certain thing called momentum. There is a thing called, fighting your butt in the playoff spot, fans booing you, fans chanting MVP for Kobe in your own arena, your star player going out, the team rallying together to get in the playoffs, and maybe, Dirk comes back while the team has banded together, kicked ass the last couple weeks (maybe pull a win over the Suns or Lakers), and now that it is playoff time, THIS YEAR IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE YEARS BEFORE! Because now, we are “peaking” at the playoffs. Now we have fought through MAJOR adversity, injuries, trades, coach problems, team problems, etc…To finally have it all together come playoff time. I personally think we can beat ANY team in 7 games come playoff time. SERIOUSLY. All we have to do it get there. The reason being, and the reason why this story, this year would be even better than winning the last two, is just that. ESPN is all about saying “they havent recovered from the last two years”…Have we forgot that the last two years the mavs were favorites to win? We still have the main core. We have added JASON FREAKING KIDD. Dudes, he is still new under this whole Avery system. And that is why, Avery and Kidd and the Mavs are coming under so much fire as of late. Because YES, we havent been winning, but people actually EXPECT us to win. Because we have a STACKED team. The fact is DAMP has stepped up his game, we have a fierce starting 5 and a pretty damn lean bench. Avery, yes, is screwing up big time, but I think that AS A TEAM, the team has been through a lot and they want to win a championship MORE THAN ANYBODY. Can you name a team that wants it more after what the mavs have been through? I can’t. And Kidd wants some action too believe me. Just like the Giants, the story was that much greater beacause of all the damn, especially from their own fans. I as a dallas fan, believe that Avery makes CRAPPY decisions, I see that the refs RUIN games for us. I mean seriously, We wouldve won half of these 0-8 games if the refs werent so biased. We wouldve beaten the Lakers, the Spurs, the Celtics..these were close games. It’s not about us not being able to finish, it’s about a whole lot of crap. Come Playoffs the Mavs are going to finally be the underdogs. And it’s a role i think they are all ready to take on, because it WILL put some fire under them. IT’S TIME TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. IT’S NOT OVER.
By JaredNow on Mar 24, 2008 at 11:51:38 pm
another thing about Kidd. If you watch the games you can hear Avery yelling plays for Kidd to run EVERY time he takes down the ball.
Avery needs to sit on the bench and let Kidd RUN the offense. To top it off, Avery has come up with some terrible plays that the defense just sees right through. I honestly felt like I was watching a Dunbar game on the local cable station. It’s like they are going through the motions of the plays instead of just getting out there and playing. And I mean EVERY play. Another thing is, before the trade, everyone in the metroplex had a huge fear that Kidd would go somewhere else, even in the east-because we knew that an addition of Kidd would make the team WAY better, wherever he went. We just have to let this thing work. We can’t snap our fingers and it work like magic. Our coach has only been coaching for a few years! he has no idea how to deal with adding one of the greatest athletes of all time to an already talented bunch. I mean, could you imagine Kidd with the Lakers, or Celtics, or Cavs? We did imagine it, before he came, and we all begged for Kidd to come. I watched game one of his return like Jordan had come back. It is AWESOME that we have Kidd, Dirk, and the fellas (stack, jet, even j-ho), on one solid squad. Also, Dirk is ready as hell (although injured) to prove to everyone that he can DOMINATE in the playoffs. He is STILL the MVP. He is still one of the best (top 3) players in the game. It’s ON.
By selke99 on Mar 25, 2008 at 1:31:24 am
I wouldn’t necessarily call JET clutch. You are talking about ONE GAME against the Lakers when they were down 25. JET had a great series against the Spurs when they went to the finals. But in the Finals and against GS last year (along with everyone else) he just disappeared. Even if he comes off the bench, I expect as much out of him as a starter because I believe he makes starter money. I don’t think another team would pay him as much as Cuban did. I would call Dirk clutch more than JET. I think JET needs to be a consistent 20 point scorer, which I don’t think he’s anywhere close. Turns the ball over a lot too and is an average on the ball defender.
By JaredNow on Mar 25, 2008 at 1:38:18 am
well I used to think we should have traded the Jet. I used to like Howard. Now it’s the exact opposite. Howard is now the bane of my existence (as a player, avery is the at the top though), while the Jet is now my go-to guy (after Dirk, and sometime Stack) when I talk to my T.V. But yeah, he was pretty awful towards the end last year and I saw him BLOW a couple of games this year (San Antonio)…but lately he’s had a pretty swift jumper.
By JaredNow on Mar 25, 2008 at 1:39:18 am
…that’s San Antonio during the Kidd disaster. RD 1 when Kidd should’ve been in.

F*%K AVERY JOHNSON! Even during his time as player, the Spurs were no good!!! He’s feeding his ego by not letting Kidd play since he was outclassed even up to now. HEY AUBREY, I don’t like your opinions, you sounds like Avery himself. You SUCKS!!!

and i make my own opinions if i didnt i would have been excited Kidd came i never have been and since hes been here hes done nothing proving he wasnt worth the money or who we gave up. I wouldnt have straight traded harris for worthless Kidd. He will be in the hall of fame but hes a loser that will never win a championhip…

Why do you all hate little ole me and my King Kong sized ego?
By WyldMavsFan on Mar 25, 2008 at 3:23:31 pm
I think a big reason JET looks a little shaky lately is that he plays most of his min (espcially in the 1st half) with the entire 2nd team. He has to create every shot he shoots b/c Malik Allen, Bass, George, none of them do much on offense and it makes Terry look bad. He needs to be in with Kidd a little more, and I know Avery thinks it’s a D liability with both of them in, but as we all know, Avery is overthinking it, like he does everything else.
I think JET has hit some huge shots for us. He tries his best to keep us in games with the 2nd team, and he can’t do it alone. Avery needs to shorten the bench, and let Terry (our best shooter) to get to play with Kidd so he can get the open shots Kidd gets players and not give those open shots to Howard

By loyal fan on Mar 26, 2008 at 5:54:56 pm
I agree with Ross. This site is stupid. Whoever made this must be a Spur’s fan. I could go on and on about everything being said, but I just want to comment on J-ho inbounding the ball at the end of the game. That was the right move. He’s taller and more capable of passing over or around the defender.. plus Kidd was most likely an option to go to. How often do u see Steve Nash inbound the ball in that situation?
By Aubrey on Mar 26, 2008 at 6:00:20 pm
k ross come comment at playoff time if they somehow miraculously make it they are out first round fun playoffs we will have…

I hate to bring up the past, but we should have Steve Nash starting with Harris coming off the bench. Not to mention a couple championships, but no we have Kidd and Lue. Who’s to blame for that? Since that’s what everyone’s doing, pointing fingers

bad season? I never saw him have a bad season in dallas. I was always going around telling everyone we have the best pg in the league, and i guess i was the only one who noticed…

well i went to almost every game and i distinctly remember fans booing him on the court people didnt think he had any stamina that he wasnt good. He did bad in the playoffs one year…so people hated on him now want him back.

that’s because we have some of the weakest fans in the league. How in the hell are you going to chant MVP when kobe is shooting free throws? I was at game 1 last year vs. golden state, and i was more disgusted with the fans than the team. Our fans just wanted to come and observe.. the complete opposite of GS. 67 wins and u can’t get out of your seat in the playoffs?

I hate our fans i have been going to the games when they won like 14 games a season i mean ya they sucked and u went to see the other team win but the fact is you love ur team in the good and the bad. I have to say i have mad respect for fans like the spurs, greenbay, broncos bc they sell out no matter what!!!
