One Down

March 10th, 2008 Posted in Mavs Talk

Good weekend for the Mavericks with their plastering of the Nets, Dirk breaking Rolando Blackman’s scoring record, a Spurs loss and a Nuggets loss. The Mavs are now sitting 1/2 a game ahead of the Warriors for the 8th spot and 2 1/2 games ahead of Denver who is in the 9th spot. On the flip side they’re 4 games out of 1st in the conference and 3 1/2 games behind the Spurs for the division lead.

The big story out of Saturday’s game was Dirk breaking Ro’s scoring record. Since Dirk came into the league in the ‘98-’99 season only Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson have scored more points than Dirk. And to think, Avery might have wanted to trade Dirk during the off-season. That would’ve been a stroke of genius.

In what may be his best coaching decision in some time Avery started Jerry Stackhouse at the two-guard instead of Jason Terry. If this sticks it gives Jason Kidd a break from having to guard the Kobe Bryant’s and Tracy McGrady’s of the world at the beginning of games. It should also help the Mavs get to the free-throw line more since Stack is one of the few players on the team who’s willing to get to basketball and get knocked on the way if he needs to.

The Knicks are in town tonight for what should be another easy win. No Deaven George but he shouldn’t be missed too much. And this is another must win, especially with the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs trifecta looming.
