Some Good News, Some Bad News

March 8th, 2008 Posted in Mavs Talk

The good news from last night is that both the Spurs and the Suns lost.

The bad news is that Denver and Golden State both won.

This means that the little Mavericks are now only 1/2 game out of 8th place in the West and 1 1/2 games out from 9th, also known as missing the playoffs.

The Mavericks next five games are against the Nets, Knicks, Bobcats, Pacers, all at home, then the Heat in Miami. They absolutely must go 5-0 during this stretch. The Warriors and Nuggets both have pretty though schedules coming up and this is the Mavs chance to put some distance between them.

Of course there is no reason this team should be concerned about possibly missing the playoffs in the first place. Instead a combination of bad coaching decisions, players forgetting who they are (I’m looking at you Josh Howard), not being able to close out games in the 4th quarter against top-level teams and just all around poor basketball have lead to the fans watching the bottom of the standings much more closely than the top.

Let’s not forget that this team started the year 2-3 and just looked pathetic. Then they turned it around and improved to 14-5 over the next 14 games.

Here’s hoping this stretch of games is the turning point for the rest of the year.
