At least Kobe likes Avery’s coaching

March 3rd, 2008 Posted in Avery Johnson

Avery’s decision not to double Kobe for most of the second half was a little puzzling. When a guy’s going for 30 points in one quarter plus OT you may just want to have that second body on him. They finally did start doubling up on him with about 2 minutes left in OT, but it probably should have come sooner. And earlier in the game not only did the Mavs not double Kobe, they came off of him to double Gasol, which Kobe just loved:

Bryant was shocked he wasn’t the one getting doubled.

“I’ve never been doubled off of since Shaq [O’Neal] left,” he said. “They doubled off of me, and I was sitting there like it was Christmas. It was a good feeling.”

Avery’s response? “He didn’t cooperate on any of our defenses.”

Seriously. Kobe is either A) the best player on the planet or B) the second best player, behind LeBron. Dirk is top 5, and he gets 3 guys on him sometimes. Kobe says Avery’s defense was like Christmas. Where the hell is Dell Harris? How much would it take to get him to coach the rest of the season? I think losing him has a lot to do with what’s going on this season. Avery looked really smart when he had smart assistants backing him-up and making decisions.
